"Deeds, not words."
Don't tell me you want to play D1 baseball and then show up 25% of the time.
The kids who make it? They fall in love with the process of getting there - not the dream.
New podcast episode out now.
Parent asked me about playing multiple sports for their 14 year old son who wants to play baseball in college. Here’s my fairly long answer.
TLDR: Specializing in baseball better include a variety of non-baseball specific athletic problem solving
The biggest lie in youth baseball: the games you win now will mean something later.
They won't.
You can win tons of games on 60' fields while ignoring the skills players need for 90'.
The # of your kids who don't get cut day 1 of HS tryouts is a scoreboard that matters.
There are 5 ways to get out as a batter in baseball/softball. There are 15 ways to have a productive/successful at bat. Stop dwelling on outcomes. Stop dwelling on the negative. You have 3x the chances of having a productive at bat than an unproductive at bat.
@hossjob My son got cut from his team…final got “some reasoning” from his coach 3 weeks later. Was told that he is probably gonna be the kid who plays longest out of the whole team but is getting cut cuz he basically isn’t refined enough right now…going into 13u. SMH
This kid is just getting started! Has a high ceiling! He is looking to play in college, so if you need numbers and are starting to look for players, let me know or contact him.
@drivelinekyle@devenmorgan They also make it sound like he is just up there humping middle-middle fastballs all game long…not at all what he is doing. And Franc saying they won’t chase that slider…he made a career chasing that slider off guys that didn’t throw that hard…
@devenmorgan Those who give a shit will do everything they can to do things well…it’s like making new laws…criminals are still going to break the law, but hopefully we do enough to keep it from hurting others.
@hossjob Could not agree more!!! I have to constantly remind players and parents, that some failure at the plate is not a bad thing…the number of people who think their young kid should be perfect all the time and immediately go to mechanics is staggering…mechanics is last adjustment.
@hossjob Been talking with my hitters about evaluating their previous at bat…I think goes with this.
1. Did I swing at good pitches?
2. Was I on-time?
3. Did I have good intent?
If one of those 3 is not a yes…that’s probably what I need to focus on in my next at bat…not mechanics.
@hossjob Preach it! I have this conversation with players a lot…why can’t I throw or hit harder…your physical output is lacking!
It takes work and time…compound interest!
Just listened to an impactful talk by Deven Morgan, Director of Driveline Youth Academy, and it really resonated with me! 🎤⚾️ He emphasized the critical importance of holding players accountable. Here are some key takeaways:
💪🏾 Hard Work Gives You Honesty: The effort you put in reflects your true commitment. Are you genuinely dedicated to your goals?
🤔 Do They Really Want It?: It’s not just about words. Are players saying they want success, or are they showing it through their actions?
This message serves as a powerful reminder for all athletes and coaches alike to evaluate commitment levels and take accountability seriously.
