“Most freshmen are not capable of playing winning football yet at this level.”
Notice what Curt Cignetti didn’t mention in this interview:
Talent.
Every college player already cleared the talent threshold coming out of high school.
But talent still has to pass through four stages before it becomes winning football:
1️⃣ Physical development: Bigger, stronger, faster
2️⃣ Scheme mastery: Understanding the offense/defense
3️⃣ Program standards: Learning the expectation level
4️⃣ Consistent execution: Proving you can do it every week
Most players take a year or two to move through those stages.
But it’s not about age.
It’s about physical and mental maturity.

Freddie Freeman drops a nuclear bomb on all the people that harass me for using batting average as a measuring stick.
I will never, and I literally mean never, use any sort of above replacement value to understand a player’s contribution to the team. Baseball isn’t that complicated. None of the silly stats from the past 20 years have value. BUT MONEYBALL! How are A’s doing? The more often you’re on base, the better you are for the team. Save the rest of the calculations for astronomers.
I’m not a “swing only” guy. There are plenty of reasons why hitters don’t find success. But, the swing is the low hanging fruit and it’s definitely the first thing to address.
The blood pressure of check ups. 🤷♂️

Fascinating discussion from #Texas baseball coach Jim Schlossangle today about players balancing analytics.
"Anybody that's super data hungry probably is not a good player. It's way more about being a competitor."

🚨 Schwarber : Hitting Advice
• Keep load relaxed + efficient
• Simple mechanics = time to react
• Still head + balanced eyes
⭐️ A great example of why chasing exit velo in the cage can lead to bad habits - longer swings + stiffer mechanics.
Short + Quick + Relaxed

Lenoir Rhyne in 2025 set the record for most Homeruns in a season….ever…at 137.
We don’t train “exit velocity” or “launch angle”
We train our swing, the ability to know how to get a hit and most importantly, in my opinion, moving a lot of weight in the weightroom.
……..
This tip can help almost every pitcher.
Front foot down, then throw, is the feeling you want.
Allow your delivery to happen, get to a strong position at foot strike, then bring down the house.
Well timed intensity.
Stay sideways as long as possible.
Build rhythm into foot strike, get violent after. Resist early shoulder rotation, rotate late in a hallway, be patient.
