NEW: Universal Credit rises by £6 per week from today.
Unfortunately this increase doesn’t reflect the rising cost of essentials, but nevertheless will be a lifeline for many.
Our social security system should always cover the cost of essentials and be based on what things actually cost - that’s why we’re calling for an independent body to set the rate of Universal Credit, just like we do for minimum wage.
