@pplsartofwar Was proposed nearly 40 years ago in Yes, Minister.
"We'll give them a comprehensive education, to make up for their comprehensive education."
@AntnCastillo3@martianwyrdlord@UCCavalier Similar to Ukraine though, you have to ask which is the better path. Integration with a culturally very similar power? Or abnegation, embracing a totally foreign ethnos and culture to at least claim to be "independent".
@haravayin_hogh@lemurdaze On the subject of the Iranian regime falling apart, I don't know why anyone serious believed this. They weathered the recent protests with ruthlessness and there are no alternate power centers inside Iran. There's no one identifiable for the disgruntled to defect to.
@haravayin_hogh@lemurdaze Hard to compare 20 years ago to now. The war is being waged very differently from how it would have been under W.
Ukraine fighting on for four years now has also left me with an intense skepticism towards just assuming US stockpile woes must determine the course of a war.
@haravayin_hogh@lemurdaze None of this is to imply that starting the war was a good idea. The NYT story of the war being started under crazed delusions of regime collapse seems the most likely.
@haravayin_hogh@lemurdaze Question then becomes why they are not doing it now. Yes US has deindustrialized too much for say, a protracted war over Taiwan. But we're not talking about that. And with the way Iran's currency has collapsed, sourcing missile components is likely much harder then it was.
@haravayin_hogh@lemurdaze The claims I've been seeing recently are that traffic is restaring, and Iran is losing the ability to contest trade thru the straight. If this happens, wouldn't the Trump admin just be able to starve out Iran for years?
@avidseries@FischerKing64 In any kind of politicized environment, simplistic solutions are the only ones political coalitions can coordinate around and implement. A preference for simplistic (nor over-simplified) solutions is a preference for political reality.
@HarrierMagnus@ThomBrady5 Failure to take the island, once they start an operation, would crack their right to rule. As would Taiwan formally declaring itself independent. The current status quo suits China fine. No country wants to nuke its economy over what amounts to a point of pride.
@redaction Pretty much. You just have to keep in mind what is being selected for is ambiguous and ever changing.
In China, the boomer generation was shaped by the cultural revolution. Apparently a lot of younger generations find them lazy and entitled as a result of that experience.
@captive_dreamer It's underdiscussed that Karl Popper is very much in dialogue with this critique, whether he read Schmitt or not. Popper's proposal of "intolerance for intolerance" is a way of attempting to square this circle.
@PompeyTrogue@HaeckelGroyper There is a geopolitical argument that pushing Russia into China's camp is bad, and a quick peace should be negotiated to draw Russia back. But you can't undo decades of Nuland-esque diplomacy in a year. And appearing to "betray" Ukraine would have major repercussions for the US.
@PompeyTrogue@HaeckelGroyper Ya, even if we grant the US sponsoring Ukraine the way it did was irresponsible, it can't back away now. The other issue is the cause of this war was a lack of trust. This makes any kind of equitable peace based upon mutual guarantees impossible to push through.
