Incredibly stoked to be able to share this latest episode from the brilliant Ze Frank and Caitlyn Cowry- True Facts about Reef-Building Coral- We thought it about time the crazy world of coral biology was given an NSFW makeover!

Thanks to @AmandaEBates for her thoughts on how the recent paper from my PhD at @Coralassist_Lab (about the variability of coral heat tolerance among reefs) contributes to thermal biology and conservation more broadly.

📢New Paper Alert📢
🪸Selective breeding enhances tolerance of corals to marine heatwaves
Take-home message:
-Breeding corals for heat tolerance is feasible
-R&D needed to optimise outcomes
-Not a silver bullet solution
-Still need climate action

The first chapter of my dissertation is out! Looking at the spectral sensitivity of benthic community shifts of Hawaiian reefs. This will help us delineate reef communities for targeted restoration efforts in West Hawaiʻi. https://t.co/PlFofjYkzt @ASU_GDCS@asnerlab@baumlab
Excited to share this paper co-authored with great mentors @jrcunning & @coralprof. “The role of background algal symbionts as drivers of shuffling to thermotolerant Symbiodiniaceae following bleaching in three Caribbean coral species”https://t.co/HnuAVtm2Iv
We did also find seasonal differences in Cladocopium symbiont density in M. cavernosa and S. siderea, prompting further research into how these differences could inform bleaching predictions in the face of winter warming and extended summer warming.

2 weeks of science done #kiritimati2023! We have sampled over 500 corals including many of our previously tagged and sampled colonies. Tagging many new corals that have grown since the last El Niño. We are looking at how they and their symbionts change through this #ElNino.
Excited to head back to Kiritimati!! While we are 🙏they avoided the worst of Covid, it’s been a long 4 years waiting to get back. Excited to check on the🪸and collect important data on 🪸 resilience!! 💪 See you soon @AR_Atwood! @baumlab
Super grateful to be funded by a Leverhulme Trust Study Abroad Studentship - this year’s application deadline Jan 9th- open to those who have studied in the UK and now working in any field, anywhere except the UK/USA https://t.co/F85dAVhgKp… @LeverhulmeTrust
