Workers and supporters gathered in Heston yesterday to protest over the treatment of catering staff at Dnata Catering’s Heston facility near Heathrow, after a contract dispute left scores of long-serving employees fighting for their jobs.
The staff prepared inflight meals for American Airlines. The dispute began in March, when American Airlines moved its first and business class catering from Dnata to rival firm Do & Co following reports of mice on some aircraft. Weeks later the airline gave notice to end the Dnata contract entirely, which finished on 1 May.
Staff say they were told on 30 April they would transfer to Do & Co under TUPE rules, which protect employees when a contract changes hands. Coaches were arranged for 1 May, but after around 90 minutes workers were told the transfer was not going ahead and were sent home, leaving them in limbo.
Unions say around 70% of the Heston workforce are women, many with over 30 years of service, and that most were offered just two weeks’ pay. The number affected has been put at up to 170 by the GMB and fewer than 120 by Unite. Unite has instructed lawyers to take legal action against Dnata and Do & Co, and says Gate Gourmet has since stepped in to help rescue some jobs.
Dnata says the American Airlines contract ended on 1 May and that, in line with UK employment law, colleagues assigned to it were transferred to the incoming provider under TUPE regulations, which protect employees’ rights and continuity of employment. It says it kept staff informed and engaged with Unite throughout.
The workers who protested yesterday are calling for justice and for the UK authorities to intervene.

@boltapp We were stranded on the M4 at 2:30AM in 4°C after our bolt driver ignored a suspected tyre issue. No replacement vehicle was sent. We waited 50 mins before calling a relative to rescue us. A £2 refund on an £85 fare is unacceptable! They've taken no accountability #fail

Having lost loved ones to Covid, this for me is personal.
Given huge level of BAME deaths, we need to urgently tackle structural racial inequalities in society, including in our NHS.
If BAME doctors/nurses are good enough to die on frontline, surely they’re good enough to lead.

@easyJet You’ve cancelled the flights and not sent any notification! There appears to be a flight from another airline, can we book that one and will you reimburse us for the new flight? Is there a limit? How do we do this? It is urgent
