Whether it be a keffiyeh tie or a watermelon pin, the Ontario Medical Association (@OntariosDoctors) ought to have better things to be doing with their time than to waste my time talking about my attire. Like working to improve healthcare for people living in Ontario, or speaking up about our healthcare worker colleagues in Palestine and Lebanon who continue to be killed by the Israeli military attacks on healthcare.
Shame on the Ontario Medical Association and their leadership.
I tried to attend the @OntariosDoctors annual general meeting tonight in Ottawa, and was removed from the room by members of their executive team Sandy Zidaric and Adam Farber because I wore my watermelon pin that I’ve worn countless times without issue in many spaces including on parliament hill. They cited the concern that the watermelon pin as a political symbol could possibly make other physician colleagues in the room “uncomfortable” or “unsafe”.
All the while genocide continues in Palestine. When I asked if their policy of what could not be worn on the bodies of their members in their meetings have applied to any other political symbols or attire, they could not give me other examples. They asked me to remove the watermelon pin or leave the room, or sit in another room by myself to tune into the meeting virtually. I declined and left. I explained to them this is an incredibly disappointing and discriminatory policy for their meetings, and I hope it is revised.
I know medical colleagues including medical learners who have been kicked out of clinic because they wore a watermelon pin. These are examples of anti-Palestinian racism. As a physician, I stand in solidarity with my Palestinian medical colleagues who have been killed by the Israeli military and continue to be subjected to genocidal violence. Over 1,700 Palestinian healthcare workers have been killed by the Israeli military in Gaza. Many Palestinian healthcare workers remain in Israeli captivity and are being tortured by the Israeli military, including Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a paediatrician who stayed to care for his patients in the hospital he was the medical director of.
Shame on @OntariosDoctors for not only censoring what is allowed to be displayed on the bodies of their members, and even more so to be painfully silent in the face of attacks on our medical and healthcare worker colleagues in Palestine. Don’t look away from the genocide in Gaza. These acts of discrimination are forms of racism, and racism is a distraction from the real issue of ending Canadian complicity in Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
If people talked about LA the way they talked about Gaza:
- I don’t know anyone there why should I care?
- Things like that happen all the time
- The situation is too complex to have an opinion, like what’s the fire’s side of the story?
- Can’t they just leave?
- I need to take care of my mental health
WFP strongly condemns the horrifying incident on January 5, when a clearly marked @WFP convoy was shot at by Israeli forces near the Wadi #Gaza checkpoint.

Healthcare workers all over the world are calling for the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya who was abducted by the Israeli forces on December 27, over four days now.
As healthcare workers, we refuse to be silent and we refuse to be complicit as an ongoing genocide in Gaza is being committed by Israel.
As healthcare workers, we have a commitment to preserving humanity and life, as do the Palestinian healthcare workers who continue to care for their people despite facing genocide.
Israel is systematically and deliberately targeting and attacking Palestinian healthcare workers because they practice humanity and life in the face of genocidal colonial violence.
We stand united against the dehumanizing rhetoric and politics of Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people. End the genocide. End the occupation. Free the people of Palestine.

Israeli media outlet "Channel 12" reports that the #ceasefire agreement with #Lebanon, coupled with the current situation on the ground, is causing "sleepless nights for residents of the northern region, raising doubts about their sense of safety and their willingness to return."
The Israeli media adds: "We see pictures of displaced Lebanese returning their cites, but no picture of settlers back to their homes."
Put it simply, the southerners in Lebanon are attached to their lands, unlike the #Israel/i settlers, they are alien to the land they have colonized.
Lebanon has zero air defences. There is no operational need for Israel to bomb at 4am.
The only reason they bomb in the middle of the night is to maximise civilian casualties and especially to kill as many children as possible, who would mostly be outside in waking hours.
Justin Trudeau continues to break international law as Canadian made parts fighter jets continue to make its way to Israel. Without a two way arms embargo and full divestment and sanctions on Israel, Canada is fully complicit in Israel’s war crimes.
What a troll. The ICC found reasonable grounds to believe that Netanyahu has committed crimes against humanity, including the use of starvation as a weapon. Canada is legally obliged to assist the court as a signatory to the Rome Statute. It's not "woke" it's international law.
UNIFIL statement:
This morning, peacekeepers at a position near Kafer Kela observed an IDF Merkava tank firing at their watchtower. Two cameras were destroyed, and the tower was damaged.
Yet again we see direct and apparently deliberate fire on a UNIFIL position.
Never in my 41 years on this earth did I think I’d ever be watching a holocaust unfold on my phone live.
Humanity has failed and failed catastrophically!
I’m sorry but if Russian bombs rained down on displaced Ukrainians in a hospital courtyard & they were burnt alive, there would be wall to wall media coverage. Keir Starmer would do an emergency address to the nation. The world would stop.
But Palestinian lives don’t matter.
The whole world is watching the smallest country in the Middle East defend itself alone and stand up to World Zionism
Lebanon has the right to defend itself.
God save Lebanon.
UNIFIL statement:
Early this morning, peacekeepers at a UN position in Ramyah observed three platoons of IDF soldiers crossing the Blue Line into Lebanon.
Just wondering if, after Israel has killed over 200 UN workers in Gaza, shot at peacekeepers in Lebanon, and invaded a sovereign member state, it might, perhaps, be time to expel them from the… UN?
Southern Beirut being pummeled.
The most depraved army in the world is literally mass murdering people around the clock and then whines that everyone hates them.
