Andy Burnham has suggested he could delay his free national care service well into the 2030s to avoid having to raise taxes to fund it.
Speaking on Wednesday, the prime minister acknowledged that savings from the scrapping of the current pensions triple lock would not fund his social care reform plans until later in the next decade.
Costings published by the government on Wednesday estimate the pensions policy will save £15bn a year in cash terms by 2039-40, rising to £50bn by 2049-50, equivalent to £11bn and £30bn in current prices.
Burnham said that “savings on that scale would be enough to pay for social care, but obviously they’re not released immediately”.
Asked by Sky News if tax rises would be required, he said: “No, because there’s a different way of doing it. If you delay the date of introduction and you introduce a national care service progressively.”

@PaulJSweeney@JoeJFagan I would suggest that @ScottishLabour is equally guilty of using this situation for self serving political ends. As you say, it has involved complex issues, for both Labour and SNP Council since Glasgow, and has not been easy to resolve, as can also be seen in Birmingham.
@IanMurrayMP At least the Scottish government are being honest with their data. Why is the Westminster government trying to conceal the true situation in England?

Just imagine for a moment if the Iranian president stood up at the UN, imagine if Ahmadinejad had come to the UNGA, and said: “Do I annihilate the Jewish state, and do it quickly? Do I drive Israel into hell?”
Imagine the Western and global and media response and outcry.
@mtc654@realcolinquinn Trains to Ayrshire and Inverclyde run through Paisley Gilmour Street Station. That is why it would be more convenient to take the 757 bus to Paisley that stops at the train station. No need to go into Glasgow.
