They fired bullets. They hurled tear gas.They beat the unarmed. They took three lives. Then, they arrested Mahrang Baloch, convinced that if they silenced her, everything else would fall apart. The protests would die down. The people would retreat. The resistance would fade.

But Balochistan doesn’t forget so easily. The next day, across the province, people poured into the streets—not in fear, but in defiance. The sit-ins continued. The state had done everything it could, yet the people stood their ground.

So, it was time for a different approach. The fourth crackdown began in the night, the perfect hour for silencing truth. First, they cut the internet and jammed networks—no videos, no calls for help, no evidence. Then, under the cover of darkness, they moved in.

Tear gas filled the air, blanketing the streets. Security forces swarmed the sit-in, dragging people into vans. But this time, something extra was added to the script. Among the uniformed forces, men in plain clothes spread through the crowd. They fired into the night. They smashed shops, set fires, shattered windows. And by morning, the news would be ready: “Brave police endured BYC’s violence”

The government, ever the victim, would now claim it had no choice but to respond. The state’s guns? Just self-defense. The bodies? An unfortunate consequence. The fires? Well, who can say how these things start?

And by morning, a freshly polished press conference of authorities would unfold, complete with a beautifully crafted script.

A young girl in conflict-ridden Balochistan dared to believe in peaceful struggle. She carried nothing but a pen and a diary, yet somehow, that was enough to shake the foundations of a mighty state. She spoke—for the murdered, the disappeared, the orphaned. For mothers robbed of their sons, for women widowed and half-widowed, for childhoods traded for funerals. She named names. She didn’t twist words. She didn’t bow.

And so, she was arrested.

Now, the state rejoices. At last! The decades-long Balochistan conflict—enforced disappearances, military operations, a population kept in fear—all magically resolved overnight. Who knew that all it took to secure the “writ of the state” was arresting one unarmed woman with a diary?

The nation can finally sleep in peace, knowing that a government that couldn’t secure its borders, its cities, or its civilians has successfully overpowered a woman with a pen. The country’s long-standing security failures? Vanished. The ever-growing list of missing persons? Irrelevant. The deep-rooted discontent of an entire people? Silenced—because nothing says “problem solved” like a high-profile arrest.

The state, it seems, has finally won the war. Not against Baloch armed groups, not against external threats, but against the real enemy: an educated, outspoken Baloch woman.

PAKISTAN: The series of unlawful detentions across Balochistan are part of a disturbing pattern of targeting Baloch activists and dissidents in violation of Pakistan’s human rights obligations. Yesterday, central organizer for the Baloch Yakjehti Committee, Beberg Baloch, and his brother Hammal Baloch were taken by Counter Terrorism Department officials from their home in Quetta. On the same day, Ilyas Baloch, the Vice Principal of Bolan Medical College, was detained for resisting a raid on the college’s girls’ hostel.

Further, five family members of the forcibly disappeared, including two women, Saeeda Baloch and Nazia Baloch, have been detained since 19 March. The ruthless repression against those seeking answers on the fate of their loved ones shows the authorities’ cruel disregard for the suffering of the families of forcibly disappeared.

Amnesty International calls on the authorities in Balochistan to refrain from unlawful detentions and immediately release all those detained solely for exercising their human rights.
