At the Heroes’ Home Center in Northeastern State of Somalia (Xarunta Hoyga Halyeeyada ee Waqooyi Bari), a campaign has begun planting 1,000 trees named after the brave souls who sacrificed everything for their people. 350 have already been planted in phase one.

These trailblazers, equipped with master’s degrees in epidemiology and biostatistics, are ready to support National Public Health Institutes (NPIs) and respective Ministry of Health (MoH) departments across Eastern Africa by enhancing disease preparedness, improving surveillance, and strengthening outbreak response.

What is more, they have:
✅ Gained practical skills through a mentored program, boosting their research and policy engagement capacity and;
✅ Contributed to strengthening universities' ability to deliver impactful training, research, and supervision in epidemiology and biostatistics.

Happening this week: Capacity Development of Applied Epidemiologists (CDAE) Dissemination and Closeout Workshop.

The project supported by @EDCTP is proud to have graduated 15 Epi fellows from Malawi, Tanzania, Somalia, Zambia, and Kenya from our partner institutions @Jooustonline and @AmrefUniversity with master’s degrees in applied epidemiology. The Epi fellows will showcase their accomplishments and develop a short course curriculum throughout the week.

This partnership aims to nurture epidemiologists driving Africa’s health transformation. Fellows like @meyledy are advancing research to promote nutritious diets, sustainable food systems, & policies for better planetary health.
