Publication Alert!
Our new publication in Discover Public Health documents Sierra Leone’s journey in scaling up Special Care Baby Units (SCBUs), from almost no structured inpatient newborn care in 2016 to 16 units across 14 districts by 2024.
Sustained progress requires investment in the health workforce, systems, quality improvement and post-discharge follow-up.
A baby discharged alive is not a baby we have finished caring for.
👶🏾 60,000+ babies cared for since 2017
📈 Annual admissions increased from 1,031 to 12,350
💙 Survival to discharge improved to ~87%
But scale-up is only part of the story. Our experience shows that infrastructure is the easy part.
Sierra Leone just wrapped its first Annual Hospital Performance Review under the National Hospital Strategy 2025-2030, a strategy I developed & have been implementing for the past year.
10 strategic objectives. Hospital trackers. KPIs. Regional rollouts. Real accountability.
Progress isn't uniform. Financing gaps, workforce constraints & infrastructure deficits are real. But hospitals are increasingly owning their transformation. Systems are working. Accountability is growing.
For the mothers & children of Sierra Leone, this work matters.
“Hospitals are a source of hope.” Prof. Roy Nobhojit
Today we launched a leadership & management training for Hospital Management Teams across Sierra Leone.
The program strengthens the leadership and teamwork that power quality hospital care.

Pneumonia kills, but it’s preventable and treatable.
Know some danger signs: fast or difficult breathing, chest indrawing, high fever, poor feeding, and extreme tiredness. If you see ANY of these signs, go to the nearest hospital immediately!
