@HandMissals This was preserved in the English Books of Common Prayer - the couple went up to ‘The Lord’s Table’ from the ‘body’ of the Church. Communion was compulsory until 1645. This may have helped preserve rood screens and chancels.

@BijanOmrani I was at a state school in the ‘70s. We did nothing about the Empire at all, largely because on the one hand the teachers were hard left, and on the other our fathers had all been bored stiff guarding it as conscripts in the ‘50s.
