Gig economy: companies that exploit the labor of faceless workers who are neither employees nor independent contractors. Where is their protection? #ethics
@georgevhulme@rev Note that their details say that the base rate, which was a 33% cut for their workers is not going to change. This means that for those jobs, Rev will take home .95 now instead of .70. Not going to the workers.
@Discover_Pods "This isn’t planned as an increase across all projects (the lowest CPM jobs will continue to have the same pay)" - in other words, the 33% cut that transcriptionists took will remain in place. In theory, average pay will increase-more window dressing.
Here’s an idea for @rev: Why not show me, when I get my transcription back, the rate the transcriber was paid?
I mean, heh, I *know* why they wouldn’t do that.
But it would certainly be easy to do. And it’d be interesting information for me, the customer.
@_SimonLau@otter_ai @zoom_us @WebSummit@TechCrunch You continue to distract from the conversation of pay and make claims that otter can do what is done at Rev. Look at the accuracy on your own chart. That one star is huge. I see AI transcripts constantly. They have limited use but cannot accurately do most work done at Rev.
@_SimonLau@otter_ai Understood. Yes, AI is advancing. Until then, transcriptionists need to be paid appropriately for their work. I do see the usefulness of otter_ai for individuals. #ethics#labor
@_SimonLau@otter_ai Promoting your product not the issue. Appropriate pay is. Ai cannot handle these amounts/types of work as accurately as a transcriptionist. Many people don't want to edit their own notes. Comparison chart between several companies including Rev and otter: https://t.co/IoRHsvEDni
@_SimonLau@otter_ai otter_ai - not a replacement for this work. VR software can't replace human ear/brain to decipher multiple speakers with accents, speech idiosyncrasies, terminology, proper context of words, and do it on a large scale. otter_ai - perhaps great for individual notes. Not this.
They should just go get a different job, right? Are you elderly with no retirement to supplement Social Security/Medicare? Do your elderly parent needs constant care? Do you have a debilitating illness such as MS or rheumatoid arthritis. Do you have severe anxiety?

Rev: "A very small percentage of jobs have been lowered ... these rates can, and often do, increase over time to much more than the originally posted amount"
New pay tier: Jobs that were .45/min, now .30. Job 95 hrs old: .50/min. Minimal pay rate increases for difficult jobs
"This increases what our freelancers make for many jobs, with some cases now starting up to 36% higher than before." These are jobs that are near or are impossible to transcribe. The $/audio min sounds great, but the total time to complete these makes the actual $/hr abysmal.
