In 2017, Bashar Al-Assad declared victory in Syria. But things got rapidly worse, much worse for the population. There was no 'victory dividend': This was the beginning of the downfall for Assad.

Analogies are limited and self-serving. The Assad and Iranian regimes are different in nature and structure, their wars are different and Iran has size and potential money from oil sales etc.

But something similar may happen in Iran: the regime will gloat about its 'victory' while things rapidly worsen for the population. People will ask: 'where is the victory dividend?' The answer is that this is no victory at all.

.@elonmusk says that no one can name a person who died from his aid cuts. In fact, I've met the kids who are dying, and I've talked to the families who lost children. In my columns, I've cited many, many names of people who have died because of Musk's aid cuts. A few examples:
*Yamah Freeman was a 23-year-old woman who died in childbirth because Musk cut funding for the diesel for ambulances in her part of Liberia. She couldn't get to a hospital and died as people were carrying her there. I talked to her parents and sister in their village.
*Gbessey Kiadu, age 1, died of malaria because of his cuts to malaria medication in Liberia. I talked to his mom in her village.
*Ibrahim Koroma, an infant, died of AIDS in Sierra Leone after he interrupted HIV supplies. I talked to health workers who cared for him.
*Achol Deng was an 8-year-old girl with HIV in South Sudan who died when Musk cut funding for the health care worker who provided her medicines. I talked to the healthcare workers.
I could go on and on. In almost every village you go to in South Sudan, Uganda, Liberia, Sierra Leone or other countries I reported in, you find people dying because of aid cuts. I challenge Musk: Come with me on a reporting trip, and we'll talk to these moms and dads, and you'll see the dying children themselves. I think if you see the kids whose lives are at stake, maybe you'll change your mind.

Hatred of Palestinians by some extremists is pathological, it's so deep seated and normalized among some people and the way they talk of hatred of the whole group has been increasingly normalized in recent years in a way that few other bigotries are normalized. I encounter it every day on replies to my posts and one can see it in the language used.

The hatred includes two basic, but contradictory, concepts. First, that the Palestinians don't exist, so they are put in parenthesis, "Palestinians." Second, is the assertion that basically any ill treatment of them is acceptable and hatred of them all is acceptable.

The two are contradictory, because if one really believed they didn't exist as a people, then why hate them all and excuse violence and mistreatment of them?

The hatred of them spans the gamut from arguing they should be expelled, ethnically cleansed, even subjected to genocide. At its root is a view that they don't deserve basic human rights, that they aren't equal, that they aren't the same as any other group of people. It's visceral and disturbing. It goes far beyond a discussion of a "conflict" or a dispute.

This hatred and its normalization in some discourse should be studied because it has increasingly radicalized some people and polities and extends beyond the "conflict" zone to the way people talk in other places. One should be wary, and guard against, extremism in discourse and excusing human rights abuses. Abuses and hatred of whole peoples doesn't usually end with just one group, but extends outward.
