Every few months, the BBC comes out with another big investigation into smuggling.
Each individually may be interesting, but as a whole, how much BBC resource on this one question?
None ever result in sensible policy change to provide asylum seekers with safe alternatives ofc🤷♀️
Cutting ODA from 0.5% to 0.3% by 2027 is deeply shortsighted and doesn’t make anyone safer.
The deep irony is that development money can prevent wars & is used to patch up the consequences of them, cutting this support is counterproductive and I urge the government to rethink.
George Monibot, "You can't apply for asylum until you arrive on these shores"
"But you cannot also also in your home country that you're trying to escape, seek a visa on the basis that you're going to apply for asylum, you can't do it"
"It's a perfect Catch 22" #BBCQT
"There isn't actually a formal route that you can take that would satisfy the government"
"This is why people are forced to come here by other means, for instance in small boats"
"Of those who came here in small boats up to June 2024, 66% were granted asylum"
‘We owe it to the thousands of children who have been killed to pause and open ourselves up to the fullness of the little lives that were snatched away.’
Goodbye to the slain children of Gaza. You were loved, you are remembered, you did not deserve it. https://t.co/qDQJPHWgSO
Just now -- acclaimed British surgeon testifies to #UK Parliament, detailing how #IDF "quadcopters" would arrive at the scene of airstrikes in #Gaza & "pick-off" / "shoot" the injured, including children.
The vote by the Israeli Parliament (Knesset) against @UNRWA this evening is unprecedented and sets a dangerous precedent. It opposes the UN Charter and violates the State of Israel’s obligations under international law.
This is the latest in the ongoing campaign to discredit UNRWA and delegitimize its role towards providing human-development assistance and services to #Palestine Refugees.
These bills will only deepen the suffering of Palestinians, especially in #Gaza where people have been going through more than a year of sheer hell.
It will deprive over 650,000 girls & boys there from education, putting at risk an entire generation of children.
These bills increase the suffering of the Palestinians & are nothing less than collective punishment.
Putting an end to UNRWA & its services will not strip the Palestinians from their refugee status. That status is protected by another UN General Assembly resolution until a fair and lasting solution is found to the plight of the Palestinians.
Failing to push back these bills will weaken our common multilateral mechanism established after World War 2.
This should be a concern to all.
I’m devastated to see yet another Israeli strike on a school in Gaza. We cannot become numb to violations of international humanitarian law and look away from the loss of innocent lives. I reiterate the urgent call for a lasting ceasefire. https://t.co/fjsaCI70Yx
The IRC stands with our partner @AneraOrg after their staff member was killed by an Israeli air strike on Deir Al Balah last Friday. We extend our condolences to the family of the staff member, who have also sustained injuries in the attack. Aid workers are #NotATarget. (1/2)
The first rule of humanitarian work is ‘do no harm’.
That airdrops have killed people in #Gaza is terrible and another reason why they are not the answer to the crisis.
Instead, Israel must open its land crossings to aid and aid workers.
A #CeasefireNOW is desperately needed.
On March 7th, President Biden announced plans for the US military to build a temporary pier on the coast of Gaza in the Mediterranean Sea in order to help deliver humanitarian aid.
Today the US also issued a joint statement with the European Commission, the Republic of Cyprus, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom announcing the activation of a "maritime corridor" to support humanitarian assistance.
Our statement from @avrilbenoit:
""The US plan for a temporary pier in Gaza to increase the flow of humanitarian aid is a glaring distraction from the real problem: Israel’s indiscriminate and disproportionate military campaign and punishing siege.
The food, water, and medical supplies so desperately needed by people in Gaza are sitting just across the border. Israel needs to facilitate rather than block the flow of supplies.
This is not a logistics problem; it is a political problem.
Rather than look to the US military to build a work-around, the US should insist on immediate humanitarian access using the roads and entry points that already exist."

Women and girls suffer disproportionately in crisis settings. Gaza is no different.
"On #IWD24 the IRC is again calling for an immediate & permanent ceasefire in Gaza and for a fundamental shift to a feminist crisis response," says IRC's @DenisaDelic.

We are appalled by reports today that more than 100 Palestinians were killed and over 750 injured after the Israeli military opened fire as desperate crowds sought food assistance in western Gaza.
I spoke to the President of the @RESCUEorg , @DMiliband on my new show ‘The World Today’ and asked him what he thought of Britain’s standing in the world.
Thanks @Mandy_Segall for organising this.
