Specialise or Generalise?
“A good specialist should be a fairly good generalist.” __ @elisonk@ug_lawsociety#YoungLawyers’ symposium. This to me, is a perfect answer to the question of whether the era of the lawyer who knows a little about everything is over.
@elisonk’s point stayed with me because specialisation should deepen a lawyer’s knowledge, not narrow their vision.
Consider a lawyer advising on an energy project @HowardMwesigwa . Beyond the energy laws, the transaction may raise questions of tax @baseassociates1 employment, environmental regulation and constitutional law. A good specialist must recognise these connections, even when the finer details require another expert.
As @ruth_muhawe observed, specialisation becomes particularly important when clients face complex, high-value legal issues. They want someone who has invested the time and acquired the expertise to handle the matter well. Her own journey into technology law illustrates this. Rather than follow established paths, she identified an emerging area and deliberately invested in the knowledge she believed the market would eventually need.
Philip’s journey took a different route, perhaps a route most of lawyers take. He began as a generalist, gained exposure to different areas of practice, and gradually developed expertise in corporate and commercial disputes.
Their experiences point to a useful lesson for young lawyers @DearYoungLawyer, there is no single route to becoming an excellent lawyer. Some discover their niche early, others find it through experience. What matters is being intentional about growth.
We need breadth to recognise the problem, depth to solve it well, and the judgement to know when to bring in another expert.
Perhaps the question is not whether to become a generalist or a specialist, but how to develop the breadth of knowledge and depth of expertise that effective legal practice demands.
A good specialist must first be a good generalist, and must never stop learning.

Bail denied again.
Today, female environmental activists appeared in court but were denied the right to apply for bail. The magistrate claimed the case is "at an advanced stage." They have been remanded again until November 6, 2025.

Happy International Teachers’ Day to these wonderful Trainers from Justice Advocacy Africa! Through your selflessness in teaching Trial Advocacy, you’ve touched lives forever. May your cups never run out as you cause positive impact in the Legal Profession.
The trial of 12 activists accused of causing a public nuisance on Kampala roads during an anti-EACOP protest resumed at the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court. Defense lawyers led by Sam Wanda, challenged the state’s attempt to introduce a previously undisclosed letter requesting CCTV footage. The magistrate has ordered the state to disclose all materials and adjourned the case to October 16. #MonitorUpdates

I took this training after it was recommended to me by my bosses in 2023 (God bless their hearts). In the spirit of sharing, I recommend any lawyer that desires to improve their litigation skills.
Besides litigation, your communication and network skills will be enhanced.
Refuse to be the reason for case backlog! The victims of delayed justice are our fathers and mothers, and these are not mere case files to them. They’re their livelihood, legacies, and relationships at stake.
