What you're seeing is Venus and Jupiter. The reason you think it's strange for them to be so low is because it's less common to see any planets at this time of day.

It's science, not aliens. Next time you're unsure get the app SKYMAP. It'll show you and tell you what stars and planets you're looking at.

It's noticeably brighter and almost blinks do to its proximity to the earth and sun, and how the sun reflects off its dense clouds.

@neiltyson I have a theory on how time is relative to a persons age. As we get older time seems to pass more quickly and my theory would explain why. I've never heard anyone talk about this.
