Thank you to the @ECISTNetwork in helping share our Health & Social Care collaboration.
We have seen improvements in LOS, harm-free care, patient flow but importantly, patient and staff feedback.
Early intervention with our patients is key to help #preventdeconditioning 💪🏼🙌🏽

🛌 Preventing ICU-Acquired Weakness
This umbrella review of seven systematic reviews found that starting rehabilitation within 1–3 days of ICU admission was associated with a 13% lower risk of ICU-acquired weakness.

Great to see the promotion of activity and mobility to prevent deconditioning listed in @GeriSoc’s 12 actions to help manage winter pressures! Prioritising activity promotion through #EatDrinkDressMove#EDDM will proactively combat Frailty and Deconditioning💜 @theEDDMpodcast

"#FallsPrevention is often associated with risk-averse attitude whereby people are discouraged from mobilising so they do not fall, consequently becoming deconditioned, increasing fall risk"

Every step literally counts.
The benefits of weight-bearing alone provides significant benefits to muscle and bone strength, cardiovascular system, proprioception, sensation, cognition… the list goes on.
Movement is medicine 💪🏼
Even walking can improve health.
But how many daily steps are needed for benefits?
This meta-analysis of 17 studies with almost 227,000 participants found just 4000 steps/day can reduce the risk of all-cause mortality.
It also found:
- A 1000-step increase was associated with a 15% reduced risk of all-cause mortality
- A 500-step increase correlated with a 7% reduction in cardiovascular mortality
The “optimal” daily step count is elusive - but the threshold for benefit is less than many think.

A concept that’s completely shifted my views on exercise for healthy ageing:
"Strengthspan".
The importance of strength across ALL life stages.
Because although it’s never too late to improve our strength, it’s also important to set the foundations as early as possible.

Fantastic research that continues to support the importance of activity within the acute and community hospital setting.
You can’t go wrong getting strong 🙌🏽💪🏼
Ageing muscle + inactivity = not a good mix.
Just 6-10 days of inactivity during hospitalisation can reduce leg lean mass by >10%.
Here, multicomponent exercise (2 x 20 min sessions) improved measures of physical and cognitive function in older adults (mean age 87) when performed for 3, 4, or 5-7 days in hospital.
For most outcomes, improvements were greater with higher doses (frequencies) of exercise.

The key to preventing deconditioning in hospital is simple.
Make sure patients are out of bed, dressed in their own clothes, and independent with their activities of daily living.
It is everyone’s role to #PreventHAD#MovementIsMedicine
