There are a couple great paragraphs at the ending that address the complexity and nuance of this topic. I too have an only child who is grown, and he, (through his own expressions to me over the years), was impacted (negatively) by not having siblings he could relate to as he went through life. On top of that, his biological father was unreliable and never grew up.
