July 28th, 1851: First Solar Eclipse Photograph Ever Taken ☀️

The first photograph of a solar eclipse was taken on July 28, 1851, by a German daguerreotypist named Johann Julius Friedrich Berkowski. He was hired by the Royal Prussian Observatory in Königsberg (now Kaliningrad, Russia) to capture the image using a small refracting telescope and a daguerreotype process.

A daguerreotype is an early type of photograph that was made by exposing a silver-plated copper plate to light inside a camera. The plate had to be polished, treated with chemicals, and developed with mercury vapor to produce a visible image. The result was a black-and-white picture that had a mirror-like surface and showed fine details.

Berkowski’s photograph was the first one that correctly showed the contrast between the bright corona and the dark moon during a total solar eclipse. It also revealed some solar prominences, which are jets of plasma that extend from the sun’s surface. His photograph was considered a scientific breakthrough and a masterpiece of art.
