🚨New paper alert! and it's one I'm really excited for! Resurrection of OAS1 from the ancestor of modern horseshoe bats blocks SARS-CoV-2 replication now out in @PLOSBiology
Here's a 🧵on how we reconstructed an ancient 🦇anti-CoV protein

Huge thanks to @virologist_atu for being my partner in this & to @NardusMollentze@blJOg@robertson_lab for adding so much to the paper. Big thanks to @afiqazizphd for all your work getting us to this point, @SvenTruxa, & @WilsonLabCVR @Lab_Rihn_th for all of your support.
After jumping over to virology research, I always found the concept of transmitted founder viruses fascinating. I am delighted to see this out @PLOSPathogens https://t.co/SWmFCixm5R after a lot of work by many @CVRinfo. I attempted my first lino print to celebrate! #sciart
I wish this information made its way to more molecular virologists. I think there often is a communication disconnect there. Almost all of the publications I've read have terminology in the "avoid" column which gets picked up by researchers like myself. I hope this changes.
Help us educate our friends who might not be aware of quite how upsetting and harmful the use of certain terms can be.#AIDS2022 @juanmichaelii @drlaurajwaters @Peoplefirst_HIV
@cgroughton @AcademicChatter@AltAcChats I recently made this change. I would predict that you have all the skills and experience you need from your PhD and other SciComm/Art type work. Reworking your CV is important, but there are great career services at most Unis for this now. Happy to answer any Qs via DM!
Yesterday was my last day @CVRinfo and I received the perfect @NewZealandBeer based gift 😭 many thanks to everyone @WilsonLabCVR @Lab_Rihn_th for everything.
I like when you find a sneaky bit of sciart when reading exhibition notes. The soundtrack accompanying the films uses a chord progression based on the DNA sequence of Arabidopsis! Worth a visit and a read.
🪨 Our new exhibition An Experiment with Time by @ailbhenibhriain looks beguiling in our galleries.

TODAY IN LGBTQ+ HISTORY: On February 16, 1990, artist Keith Haring dies of AIDS at the age of 31. Known for designing the National Coming Out Day logo, below is his less known "Unfinished Painting," which he intended to serve as a reminder of his own life being cut short by AIDS.
@CVRHutchinson They could be! Someone else saw them getting their heads removed, so it seems that there are a lot of emotions being brought out by the cells.
New Zealand beer month has great timing for homesick kiwis. The sweetness of @NewZealandBeer/@fiercebeer hokey pokey stout perfectly balances the saltiness of my tears. (It is actually fantastic, as was the @8wiredbrewing celery salt hippy).
Nice perspective from Joel Wertheim putting the finding in broader context, especially COVID variants: "When viruses become more virulent" https://t.co/s9mWmwZoXk 2/n
