I think this should be an election issue. I do not understand why it is not.

I realise filling temporary posts in a meaningful way is challenging (there may not be many high quality applicants), but if maternity leave was routinely backfilled, and these opportunities were regularly available, more people might use this to fill short term career gaps, and gain perhaps valuable experience.

I am genuinely surprised to learn that permanent posts (these are essential for service delivery) are not automatically backfilled for maternity leave.
