Still struggling with the untimely death of my dear friend and @Harvard colleague Emmanuel Farhi. He was a genius, kind, modest. A future Nobel laureate. Deeply thankful for 14 years of conversations, shared meals. So badly wish for more.

With today's GDP release: we are getting unusually consistent signals as to how fast the economy is growing over the last 4 quarters:
GDP: 2.3%
GDI: 2.3%
PDFP: 2.4%
We're growing at a reasonable pace, not unusually fast. The same as the average growth rate since 2010, (2.3)
This from @Brad_Setser is dead on. Attacking China and raising risk simply makes more people buy dollars and sell RMB. It’s also worth noting that China does not meet the rules set out for being designated a manipulator. It’s intervening to strengthen not weaken the currency.
A new paper on the impact of the Trump tariffs is getting a lot of justified buzz. The main message is, no, Mr. Trump, foreigners aren't paying the tariffs; American consumers are footing the bill https://t.co/owRQm28ZAl

Fun thread from @bencasselman on gdp stats. My only complaint is it did not explain how 2017:q4 growth matters a lot for the annual average 2018 growth but not for the q4/q4 2018 growth. That’s where the real fun in these numbers is ...
The idea that Spain is past full employment despite an unemployment rate close to 15% should be seen as silly on its face, but its the stated position of many intl orgs. Kudos to @RobinBrooksIIF for pushing this point.
In which way has the new alleged JPMorgan crypto coin anything to do with blockchain/crypto? It is private not public, permissioned not permissionless, based on trusted authorities verifying transaction not trustless, centralized not decentralized. Calling it crypto is a joke
As more people worry about wobbles in the global (and European) economies, @Brad_Setser reminds us that the obvious answer is fiscal stimulus from Germany. Low recent public investment, slow growth, weakening exports, all point the same way https://t.co/sAn2hy2L4n
