Watch their lineup and one thing stands out:
No two swings look the same.
Different postures
Different rhythms
Different ways of creating power
Some hitters organize around the front leg
Some around the back leg
Some swing in extension
Some in flexion
Some create hip/shoulder separation
Some swing all at once
The details change.
Understanding the context of the hitter matters.
How do you naturally prefer to move?
Great coaching is not about more cues or drills.
It is about starting in the right place.
Try two external cues. Try two internal cues.
It doesn't mean it will always work for everyone, but it helps stack the odds and see what clicks faster.

🔍 Primitive Reflexes, autism… and why this matters for athletes too !
While I’m progressing through the Melillo Method certification, Melillo, Leisman and colleagues released a new paper showing a strong link between retained primitive reflexes, hemispheric imbalance, and cognitive performance in ASD.
And there’s an important point no one is talking about:
🧠 Autism represents one of the extreme expressions of retained primitive reflexes.
In many individuals on the spectrum, these early-life reflexes stay active much longer than expected.
It’s not the cause of autism but it’s one of the neurological signatures we often see.
And here’s where it gets interesting for my world:
what appears “extreme” in ASD also exists in a much quieter, subtler form in athletes.
⚡ Reflexes don’t have to be extreme to cause problems. I test hundreds of baseball and softball players every year.
- Many are elite movers.
- Many are perfectly neurotypical.
- And yet…
The moment a primitive reflex stays active, even at a low level, you see:
- more extension than the body can manage
- poor shock absorption
- difficulty staying in flexion
- sequencing issues
- rigidity under pressure
- increased stress reactivity
- higher injury risk
It’s the same neurological mechanism :
just a different expression on the spectrum.
🔗 Same reflexes, different outcomes
In ASD: Retained reflexes show up clearly and impact cognitive performance, attention, posture, and regulation.
In athletes: They show up as “mysterious” mechanical limitations that no amount of strength training or technical coaching can fix.
Two populations, same underlying rule:
👉 When the primitive software is still running, the system can’t operate at its highest level.
🎯 The takeaway : This new study doesn’t just advance ASD research. It validates something we’ve been observing for years:
Primitive reflexes shape movement, cognition, and performance across the entire human spectrum, from autism to high-level sport.
And if we want athletes to reach their real potential, we have to look under the hood....

Rotation is a byproduct of many different factors; the individual & their interaction with the ground based on timing, pitch location, and overall teaching.
