We faced that scenario over 14 years ago. A few details differ, i.e. I’M a U.S. citizen, and STILL wasn’t able to save my immigrant spouse! We had a community member offer to guard our son in his last yr of HS too. While we had to leave with his younger brother…my govt failed me
