The Kailasa Temple, the largest of the 34 Ellora Caves in Maharashtra, India, has stunning vertical rock-cut architecture carved from a single rock.

The top-down construction technique is particularly hard to fathom as the planning and execution seem almost impossible.

It has rock-cut obelisks, chambers, Shiva Lingams, Buddhist and Jain shrines and no one know where the estimated 400,000 tons of basalt disappeared to.

In tradition a special rock-disintegrating machine called a Brahmastra has been put forward as to how it was done, a powerful celestial weapon, often described as the "Astra of Brahma", capable of causing complete annihilation of rock.

Kailasa Temple could have been the 'Eighth Wonder of the World' and is still shrouded in mystery as the dating is generally attributed to the eighth century Rashtrakuta King Krishna I (756 – 773 AD) with some elements completed later, but this is not confirmed and could be part of a much earlier legacy.

I was probably 13 years old when my family was camping near Drumheller, Alberta, and one of the Indigenous campground owners told us to follow him out into the badlands. He took us to this tiny patch of ground...maybe two metres by two metres...and told us to stand inside it.

Outside the spot, the wind was blowing hard across the desert. Inside it...nothing. Completely still. You could literally take one step out and feel the wind hit you again...then step back in and it was gone. Like somebody had cut a perfect hole out of the air.

What stayed with me was that he already knew it was there. This was not some random lull in the wind. It was a known place. Years later, I asked people with Salish lineage about it, and they told me these kinds of windless spots are actually well known in some Indigenous traditions. Places where the land seems to control the air in ways most of us never notice because we have become completely disconnected from it.

I have never forgotten that feeling...standing in the middle of a windy desert inside a tiny pocket of absolute stillness.

So I am curious...if you have Indigenous or Native lineage, have you ever heard of places like this before? Is there a name for them? Were you ever shown one?

Germany's Potsdam station shows 15 more W/m² of solar energy reaching the ground than during the 1970s dimming era.
