The Kennedys invited Pablo Casals to play at the White House. Carter and Reagan invited Leontyne Price to sing. And Vladimir Horowitz to play. High culture has been all but erased from our public life. I have watched this, “in real time.”
A suggestion. The removal of Trump's name from the Kennedy Center should be celebrated by an improvised 24 hour festival of music, dance and - of course - comedy; Stephen Colbert presiding.
@BillKristol The moment Trump goes into Cuba he gives explicit permission for China to go into Taiwan. Preventing the world s capital of chip production from becoming part of China should be the goal not some nonsense with Cuba.
@KenRoth Also part of that miracle was due to the United States acting as the Liberal Hegemon insuring especially in the early years that freedom of the seas were guaranteed and the US would open its markets
The agreement that the Trump administration is negotiating with Iran to extend the ceasefire & reopen the Strait of Hormuz "isn’t a peace deal. It isn’t a nuclear deal. It isn’t a missile deal." It's mainly an anti-inflation deal for US midterm elections. https://t.co/ZuFPYNxpK9
Francis Fukuyama on the U.S. as a declining power:
American decline is a direct product of Trump's rise since 2016.
It is as if Trump had decided to do everything in his power to weaken the United States vis-à-vis China.
He has polarized an already polarized country, cut funding for basic scientific research, and attacked American universities which are the best in the world.
He and his colleagues have openly stated that their domestic opponents — the Democrats — are a far greater threat to the future of the United States than either China or Russia.
There is agreement among America's friends and rivals that the United States has become something of a rogue state that is contributing to global instability and disorder — as well as something of a laughingstock.
"Dollar sanctions function like powerful antibiotics–highly effective when used selectively, but less so when repeated use encourages development of resistant alternatives. . . ."

U.S. arms sales to Taiwan aren't negotiating chips – they're required by law under the Taiwan Relations Act. More than that, they're central to a free and open Indo-Pacific, and our own national and economic security.
It appears that Neville Trump just sold Taiwan,( an outpost of democracy and the leading chip center), not for “peace in our times” but in order to have China pressure Iran for an outcome in the gulf that will not totally embarrras Trump - For sure, The Art of the Fools Deal.
@gerardtbaker Neville Trump just doesn’t get it. The moment he decided to ignore Russia’s invasion of Ukraine this statement on Taiwan was predictable as the night following the day.
@BillKristol Seeing how Trump operates, especially when he is cornered, there is probably a decent likelihood that he agreed to halt future military shipments to Taiwan for Xi's help with Iran.
@ianbremmer@gzeromedia I would be careful with that remark, seeing how Trump operates, especially when he is cornered. There is probably a decent likelihood that Trump agreed to halt future military shipments to Taiwan for Xi's help with Iran.
@ForeignAffairs No one is mentioning it but there is probably an excellent likelihood that Trump commited to XI to block arms sales to Taiwan for Xi's help with Iran. It would be typical Trump.
