The number from AGBT 2026 that changes everything for AI x Biology: $0.06 per million reads — ~10× cheaper than leading platforms.

The math for Perturb-seq at ~20K reads/cell:

1B cells × 20K reads × $0.06/Mreads = ~$1.2M

Billion-cell perturbation datasets just went from out of reach for most teams to economically plannable.

But cheaper reads ≠ better models. The bottleneck shifts to experiment design: which perturbations, which cell types, which contexts. A billion cells of random data is wasteful. A billion cells of the RIGHT data — that's the hard problem.

The limiting factor in computational biology is no longer the cost of measuring cells. It's the wisdom of choosing what to measure.
