Europe wants to become the “first AI continent.”

With what?

No leading chip ecosystem.
No comparable frontier-model industry.
No sufficient power build-out.
No deployment scale.
No tolerance for the energy infrastructure AI actually requires.

What Europe does have is bureaucracy, regulation, and an apparently limitless supply of moral lectures.

A continent that tells people to ration heating in winter, endure heatwaves without air conditioning in summer, and then announces “AI gigafactories” as though computing power can be summoned by committee.

China builds the industrial stack.
America builds the capital stack.
Europe builds another regulatory framework and calls it technological sovereignty.

You cannot regulate yourself into the frontier.

And you cannot defeat China and America with €10 billion, a press release, and a room full of officials congratulating one another.

The notion of "writing a user story" strikes me as wrongheaded. Nobody sits down and writes a user story as if they were an author writing a piece of fiction. (The fact that many so-called stories are indeed fiction is the topic for another post 😄).

Nobody writes stories. Not you. Not users. Not some PO/PM. Instead, you have a conversation. You collaborate with your users. You might write down a few words to remind you what the conversation was about (that's plenty for deciding what to work on next). When you decide to start the work, you have another conversation to work out the details. You may take a few notes to jog your memory, but that's it.

You capture stories from a conversation, not write them.

The people who "write stories" are invariably doing waterfall up-front requirements gathering. They are writing a detailed waterfall specification. I don't do that. I certainly don't ask my users to do that. Nobody needs to do that. The requirements/specs are always stale by the time implementation rolls around; not worth the virtual paper they're written on.

So, don't write stories. Instead, have a conversation. Collaborate. Take a few notes.

I keep getting right wing climate change denying loons, complaining that I restrict comments on my threads, that I won't debate them. There is no debate to be had, the evidence is clear. As they say, don't wrestle with a pig, because you get dirty, and pig enjoys it.

I don't debate liars. Even though I can contradict everything climate change deniers claim, with hard evidence, I have yet to encounter a single one of these ideological climate change deniers, concede the evidence. They just ignore it. I just block people who are intellectually dishonest like this. There is nothing to be gained by debating them. Science does not advance by debate, this is not how the scientific method works.

The single biggest delusion, false belief, in mainstream politics and economics, is that somehow the climate and ecological emergency, is just another issue, which can be set aside when considering other issues.

Rather the ecological polycrisis will determine everything, economic and societal. There are no issues independent of it. It determines everything that is going to happen in our societies in the near future.

You might not like this, you might have other supposed opinions, but there is only one reality that determines life on Earth, including human life, and that is ecological reality.

Everything else, is denial, delusion and misunderstanding. Being in denial of the climate and ecological poly crisis, is like being in denial that you have a serious illness, which is getting much worse. You can carry on denying it for a while, but reality will eventually catch up with you.

Just like the reality of the climate and ecological emergency is starting to catch up with us. Denial of reality, is a short term, time limited strategy, that always ends in tears.
