We never liked Philz anyway.

By now you've seen the headlines. Philz Coffee is pulling Pride flags from its stores. The CEO calls it a "more consistent, inclusive experience." The baristas launched a petition. The Castro location still has its rainbow flag up, in what feels like a dare.

We're a queer-run publication in San Francisco. We get it. We understand why a rainbow flag matters, especially in the city where that flag was born. But while everyone is performing their Philz breakup on Reddit, we're sitting here realizing we never had much of a relationship with the place to begin with.

So rather than join the boycott, we'd like to offer something more honest: the reasons we were never Philz people in the first place.

📷 They don't serve espresso, and they're weirdly proud of it. The first time we walked in and asked for a latte, the barista looked at us like we'd ordered a cheeseburger.

📷 The whole "personalized barista" thing has always felt less like an elevated experience and more like a hostage negotiation. We don't want a relationship with our coffee. We want to tap a screen and leave.

📷 There isn't even a Philz near us. Thirteen locations and a coffee truck in SF and every single one is in the eastern half of the city. Nothing in the Sunset, Richmond, or Parkside. You can't boycott a place you weren't going to anyway.

The Pride flag removal is cowardly corporate PR dressed up as neutrality. The Castro baristas are right to push back. But this week's news didn't end a love affair. It confirmed something we've felt for years.

The generals suppressed the riots, killing some 30,000 unarmed protesters-like the ayatollahs today. And like Putin today, Justinian was trying to rebuild his shattered empire by war. After 250 years of US independence, this tyrant's dead hand from the Dark Ages is supposed to influence jurisprudence in the United States against the heritage of the Union dead, Lincoln's new birth of freedom, and the second founding of our country? This is the absurd intellectual and moral bankruptcy of the textualists and originalists of the legal positivist school who dominate this wayward court today. And why stop with Justinian? What were the views of the monsters Nero and Caligula? And what about Justinian's wife, the vindictive actress who was Empress Theodora? What did she think? The Preamble of the Constitution requires the US government to "establish Justice." This is not the language of legal positivism, which explicitly excludes justice as an "irrational ideal" beyond cognition (Kelsen 1957). Justice and morality, and not just dubious precedents, are the language of natural law, which this court needs to learn. We are NOT all originalists now.

WHY THE US WAITED FIFTY-FOUR YEARS TO RETURN TO THE MOON AFTER THE END OF THE APOLLO PROGRAM IN 1972: THE SCIENTIFIC OPTIMISM OF LEIBNIZ VS. THE STUPEFIED AGE OF ACQUARIUS

During the mid-1960s, elements of the US ruling class were preparing to impose a cultural paradigm shift away from traditional optimistic American outlooks and in the direction of Malthusianism, de-industrialization, obscurantism, historical pessimism, zero growth, hedonism, narcotics, austerity, anti-intellectualism, debauchery, and what was generally known as the rock-drug counterculture -- all understood as a counterinsurgency strategy to maintain the domination of finance capital, and of Wall Street in particular. These elements constituted an action program, sometimes known as the Aquarian Conspiracy, among ruling class think tanks and elite associations. The overarching goal was the continuation and intensification of oligarchical domination in US society.

But in the course of the decade, it became obvious that the space program of manned exploration of the nearby celestial objects launched by President Kennedy with his promise of landing a human on the moon, followed by a safe return to earth, constituted a serious challenge to this sinister counterinsurgency plan. This situation was described in a confidential document known as the Rapoport Report to the Tavistock Institute in London. Anatole Rapoport, a Soviet émigré academic specialized in mathematical psychology built this report around his finding that the popular enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity stimulated by the United States space program was dangerously increasing the authority of reason, science, technology, progress, and cultural/historical optimism in the American population. Rapoport, who saw himself as an ideological and psychological manipulator of the American masses in the service of the financier elite, was alarmed by this phenomenon. He feared that the increased hegemony of rationality, science, and optimism would make Americans less and less tolerant of oligarchical domination and manipulation, as for example by the likes of the intellectually challenged David Rockefeller of Chase Manhattan Bank and his forces then assembling to form the Trilateral Commission a few years later.

Oligarchical domination, after all, is in no way a meritocracy, but rather an irrational principle of domination, giving power to those who in no way had earned it, and who were among the most likely to produce disastrous results by trying to use it. Charles Elliott, the president of Harvard from 1869 to 1909, had complained about the stultifying presence on his campus of the “stupid sons of rich men,” and had attempted to institute an admissions policy based on intellectual talent.

But Anatol Rapoport and his co-thinkers were determined to assert irrationality and the dumbing down of the masses, as we have seen it over all these decades. The result was that, even before Apollo 11 had put astronauts on the moon in 1969, the defunding of the space program had been established as policy, soon helped along by economic decline exacerbated by the collapse of the Bretton Woods international monetary system in August, 1971. The Vietnam War, Watergate, and the chaotic Carter presidency were also strong negative factors. The existence of Skylab, the space shuttle, and other projects could change little in this picture, and things were made worse by the rise systems analysis. As we are seeing today, it is the visible participation of real people of diverse races, gender, and national origins in this epic scientific and technological enterprise that excites the imagination and influences the career choices of people all over the world. We must do everything possible to advance the cause of historical and cultural optimism, and the rule of reason, as part of the necessary efforts to overcome the present acute world crisis. So it is on to the moon, then Mars, and then – who knows?
