Speed absolutely has nothing to do with being fluent in math. Students should be taught number sense and not memorization to eliminate anxiety.

@MagalyE14541134 @WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 @joboaler I absolutely agree that a benefit to number talks is that it allows students to take control while the teacher listens. Students should be given the opportunity to share their reasonings in which teachers can later give feedback.

@WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 Q1: Memorization of math facts is unnecessary and damaging because students aren’t able to truly understand and gain number sense. Memorizing prohibits students to comprehend and explain how they got their answer which are key components in mathematics.

@WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 Q3: One of the main reasons why students have anxiety when it comes to math is due to timed tests. Students feel pressured and rushed which causes them to give up. Timed tests limits student to show their true abilities and knowledge.

When students express their thinking, others have the opportunity to gain a wide range of strategies.

@teachsci8 A4: We can promote children publishing and producing with technology by assigning projects for them to work on individually and with groups. For example, they can do research on a topic and create a prezi presentation to share with their peers. #csubte4200 #csubted @teachsci8
