Prof. Helen Durst of the GNS+ department believes that higher education is very important but not for everyone, despite the bias present in the US. In Scandinavian countries such as Denmark, vocational education and university are held at the same level. #J202#lab302
Senior Lila Szyryj states that the Roe v. Wade decision will affect how she will vote this November because “federal decisions affect local government”. #J202#lab302
@yang_ch2024 I would say “authenticity” is used more in public relations in general because it is not people paid to make someone/something look good as advertising is, but instead uses information straight from the source. #J201 #320
In lecture this week, we discussed the difference between advertising and public relations. Which difference do you believe is most important? How does this set the 2 apart and/or make one more beneficial than the other? #J201 #320
In lecture today, we discussed how social media and the internet can lead people to believe a country is more polarized than it actually is. Which forms of media are most prevalent in the phenomenon to people our age? How do you believe you are affected by it? #UWJ201 #320
In #UWJ201 we discussed deplatforming and how the algorithm can sometimes make a mistake and ban something that was not meant to be offensive. I would consider this as one negative effect of deplatforming. What are some other negative effects? #320
@rory_madden11 I think deplatforming is not even close to an extreme consequence. There are certain things that we cannot just put out there without expecting any repercussions and deplatforming takes away that right to say what we want.
@allisonbeneker I believe there is a point where people should be deplatformed. When we make an account, we agree to terms and services, and if we break those we should expect to be banned.
@ColbyBellaman It is important to make sure what we’re seeing is reliable, especially if coming from a source we do not know the background on. However, as accuracy is a key element to journalism, we should be able to rely on them to tell us the truth. #UWJ201 #320
@noa_chamberlin Unfortunately, I think sometimes journalists focus more on profit than accuracy, so writing something that will sell becomes a priority #UWJ201 #320
@bethshoop23 The way social media affects filter bubbles is really up to each individual and whether they choose to expose themselves to many different sources and perspectives or stay in one line of sight.
One of this weeks readings for #UWJ201 revealed that people tend to overestimate how radical the opposing political views are, going on the state that education only skews misjudgement even more. Do you agree? #320
@haileyystiles I think that a “neutral” news source could be successful to an extent, however I also believe a completely neutral source would be virtually impossible to achieve in our modern society.
In #UWJ201 we discussed the differences between a news segment from the 1960’s and today. Compared to the 1960’s, the modern segment was much more opinionated. How does this affect our contemporary society? #320
@ColbyBellaman I feel that our entire country is very divided and no matter what there will be at least some sort of bias in many news outlets, even the ones that claim to be “neutral”. #UWJ201 #320
