Ive written up the story of how masters student @BangorSENS Alex Carauna demonstrated a major EU restoration project failed to eradicate crayfish. Lack of post-project monitoring meant without his work this would have been lost from the conservation evidence base.
Before we started long recovery grazing we were all about adapting our edges to to be the best habitats possible
Riparian strips
Trees and scrub cages
Hedgerows everywhere
And field divisions that were terraced ponds and wet woodland strips
Now really rocking with birdsong
This is really important. Swifts (which are rapidly declining in the UK) shown to feed their young preferentially on cabbage stem flea beetles and pollen beetles - both pests in oilseed rape. First thought - what happens when the rape/canola is treated with neonicotinoids?
Fixing someone's code for them is beyond gratifying! Problem? Solved. Truly delightful moments to be had on a Wednesday morning - actual completion of a tangible task.
As an international scholar from Colombia 🇨🇴 , since my arrival for my PhD in the US back in 2011, I have battled with the uncertainty and stress of visa issues. I’m lucky I’ve been able to resolve them, but I have witnessed my peers and mentees struggle with this daily 😣

In ecology, field data often has small sample sizes, due to the work required
If we find a signal, eg in a regression of x on y, everyone is happy
If we find none, reviewers etc blame the sample size rather than accept that there may be no relationship between x & y in reality
If you are interested in conservation impact evaluation (broadly defined), looking at more social outcomes and want to work with me, this might be the scheme for you. 2 years post doc funding for ECRs not in the uk #idoimpact
