This seems dumb! But I suppose among high-skilled workers there are some you want to keep (productive high skilled workers who create real value), and others you want out (people with degrees in BS fields who will most likely be employed in BS jobs). I wonder if this is possible in practice.

@Noahpinion Here is a criticism: I did not like the scrutiny of Guns, Germs and Steel in Why Nations Fail. The scrutiny was not persuasive and Jared Diamond wrote a better book. But that is not to say Why Nations Fail was bad, it's not, but I think it's originality can be debated.

@NateSilver538 I agree with this! Academia filled with fake research, and I think most of the people I met during my PhD in econ. seemed pretty uninterested in the truth, and more interested in prestige and receiving a salary. Perhaps some fields are different, but it felt systemic to me.

There are lots of bullshit jobs where one could try and argue that someone is willing to pay for them, and therefore they must be useful, even though that is clearly not the case. A fair number of consultants fit this pattern, for example.
