One of the problems is that when you wait for years to have kids, trying to accumulate enough wealth so that you can raise children “comfortably” or whatever, your marriage becomes frail and brittle. You haven’t allowed yourselves to be tested. You haven’t met any resistance. The union atrophies. You get bored. Then one serious challenge comes along and you fall apart. You weren’t ready for it.

My wife and I have been together 15 years, started out broke. Six kids and a decade and a half later, we’ve been tried and tested a million times. We’ve been through the fire together. Problems come along and we deal with them. It’s nothing we haven’t seen before. Now we have the confidence of people who’ve been through the wringer. We have a sense of shared experience and shared achievement. We built this life together. We both belong here.

That’s the great benefit of getting married and starting a family young. Get in on the ground floor with each other. Start at the bottom hand in hand.

The best approach I ever found for dealing with behavioral issues was at a Montessori school that had a garden out back. Certain boys would get wound up and out of hand. Instead of detention or discipline, I would say: go dig a hole in the garden. Just go dig for a while.

After an hour of getting hot and sweaty and moving dirt around, they would come back inside calm and relaxed and ready to engage. The energy had somewhere to go. Instead, most schools force that physical energy into a desk and then punish kids when it comes out sideways. The approach creates the problem it claims to solve.

Germany has found an even bigger problem, namely with women studying medicine. They tend to quit their careers around age 30 when they have their first child, and they tend to choose the easier medical professions, not the hard stuff that requires 100 hour work weeks such as many surgeons do. Germany now has a shortage of highly skilled medical personnel because it replaced so many men with women in the education system.
