A desired outcome is for the related molecules to have increased anti-depressant properties or selectively interact with the brain and not the heart.

Yesterday I gave a talk about a research article from @DEOlsonLab on the total synthesis of ibogaine and related molecules. Ibogaine has anti-addictive properties, is used in opioid addiction treatment, and is a psychoplastogen.

By synthesizing this molecule, chemists could alleviate over-harvesting, and can exchange the atoms or functional groups of a synthesized product to make related molecules.

However, ibogaine is only found in ~0.3-0.4% of the root bark of Tabernanthe iboga. It is a plant used for spiritual purposes by some communities, and is impacted by over-harvesting. Additionally, ibogaine inhibits heart hERG channels, and can cause cardiac arrhythmias.
