Post-doc researching bone and diabetes at UoA. PhD on long-term effects of fetal growth restriction on metabolism (DOHaD).
Coffee addict. She/her. Nerd.
@Potemkinman We were parked maybe 1km away and it took 40 mins to get there. Lucky we followed AT's advice and took a car!
It's not like this wasn't forecasted or anything..
Please RT: We're on the hunt for a lab-based postdoc to use stem cell placentoid models and microfluidics to better understand how IVS blood flow impacts placental function. @IFPA_Official@ANZPRA1@FMHS_UoA@ABI_bioeng@GeorgiaKafer https://t.co/Mmsid84UT0
Excited that this work we were involved with is out in Nature Aging. This drug extends lifespan and healthspan in male and female mice. Bones didn't look so good, so more research to be done!
It’s been a long time coming but our paper showing long term beneficial effects of inhibitors targeting PIK3CA is out today. Awesome effort by Chris Hedges who did most of work and lead by @TMerry_NZ with input from many other NZ researchers. https://t.co/c82Z9RP7pj
Very exciting to see this published today, a massive effort and a privilege to work with such a diversely talented team, not least of all @TMerry_NZ and @ShepherdPeterR. Thanks to @HRCNewZealand for enabling the work to be done here in New Zealand.

I was lucky to collaborate on some truly awesome research during my postdoc. One such study explored whether a PI3K-inhibitor could extend health- and life-span. The paper was published in Nature Aging yesterday. 1/3

@kiwimitoman@TMerry_NZ From my days of metabolism research, PI3K is one of my top 3 favourite enzymes.
Clearly it also has important effects on bone biology. I’m looking forward to seeing where this research goes in the future! 3/3
When was the last time you saw funding success for MUSCULOSKELETAL health research from #MRFF or #NHMRC?
There’s only been a handful…. disproportionately low relative to disease burden.

PhDs: your dissertation topic is less relevant to finding a role outisde of academia than your *skills*.
Here's a 🧵 on how to translate skills you already have into corpspeak, including bullets which I used to describe my PhD work in my first corporate resume:
Back in June, I help my mom clean out her pool shed. There's a strand of old twinkle lights with plastic flamingos. "Throw them out," she says. "They don't work." But I see that the flamingos came off easily, so I start to pull them off. "I can do something with these."
@cblenkie I'm leaving the University but I'm not leaving Auckland.
I'm taking a month off to chill out and then I'll be doing my best to head back to industry again. Exciting and scary at the same time!
