One thing I’ll never understand about conservatives: All they talk about is saving money.
But they ignore the fact that preventive care, like dental care, saves the system money.
Housing the homeless saves money.
Helping addicts saves money.
It’s not about money, is it?
As a Canadian it should ring alarm bells in your skull when someone wants defund, sell or undermine a Crown Corporation. WE as Canadians own Crown Corporations. It is in ALL of our best interests to protect them from Private interests. Anyone who wants to harm them is an ENEMY.
In the last 11 days in Canada FOUR Indigenous People, including a youth, were killed by POLICE- the latest killing happened yesterday:
-August 30 Hoss Lightning, 15, shot and killed by RCMP
-September 3, Tammy Bateman, struck (with cruiser) and killed by Winnipeg police
-Sunday, September 8, RCMP shoot and kill Elsipogtog First Nation man, N.B.
-Also on Sunday, an unnamed man from Atahkakoop Cree Nation in northern Saskatchewan died in hospital after being shot by RCMP.
I’ve been reporting on this crisis for years. Indigenous Peoples are being systematically murdered in various ways and the police are at the helm of one of them.
The 15-year-old boy from Samson Cree Nation who was shot and killed by RCMP Friday morning in Wetaskiwin, AB was Hoss Lightning. His maternal grandmother sent me this photo taken of him earlier this year (he’s asking his grandmother if he looks like his late grandfather in the photo he’s holding). He was loved and cherished by his family who are devastated.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating. RCMP have told media Hoss had weapons on him (although anything could be considered a weapon and RCMP have not released details). Hoss had called 911 about an hour before he was killed because he was concerned for his safety and believed someone was following him.
A kid. Alone walking around town.
His life snuffed out like countless other Indigenous Peoples who are the victims of the highest police violence in Canada.
Alberta is on fire.
But hey, we have a budget surplus.
Albertans are dying without cancer treatment.
But hey, we have a budget surplus.
Classroom are crowded, and teachers are exhausted.
But hey, we have a budget surplus.
This is winning in #Alberta.

Apartheid ended because it was no longer economically viable and sustainable. Not because white people saw it as immoral and had a sudden change of heart.
Hey you know who camped out overnight on @UCalgary’s campus? Me, and everyone else, nearly every week, when we worked at the student newspaper and were publishing. We had sleeping bags and someone even brought in a futon.
philosophy chair getting arrested, an econ prof getting her head smashed against concrete, a street medic being held down and tased, snipers setting up vantage points to shoot at ohio state students -all because of nationwide protests against a genocide- you SHOULD be radicalized
People who broke laws that I’m eternally grateful to:
- Queer couples and interracial couples who loved each other when it was criminal
- Women who colluded to open bank accounts when it was illegal
- Medical providers who gave life-saving reproductive care that was banned
Thirty-six people from the University of Calgary Faculty of Law have signed an open letter that details how they believe Alberta's transgender policies violate charter-protected rights. They are calling on the government to reverse course. #abpoli#ableg
Whether it's the Israeli armed forces storming hospitals, shooting patients, abandoning newborns to die in incubators, torturing hospital directors and bombing cancer wards or it's Palestinian demonstrators walking past a hospital, both sides have issues respecting healthcare
So when doctors are telling us that Smith's policies are going to harm kids...if you're siding with Smith on that, is that because you think she knows more about children's health than doctors do? Or because you're okay with harming trans kids in the name of ideology?
