Nigeria’s classrooms are now crime scenes.

Since 2014, more than 2,496 students have been abducted in 92 school attacks across Nigeria.
From Chibok to Dapchi, Kankara, Kuriga, and now the latest attacks in Borno and Oyo, the pattern is painfully familiar.

And On May 15, 2026, suspected insurgents abducted children from a school in Askira-Uba, Borno State, just minutes after a military patrol left the area.

This is no longer a “Northern problem.” It is a national security emergency.
The deeper tragedy? Nigeria already has laws criminalising kidnapping as terrorism. The challenge is not legislation, it is enforcement.

Today, we launched PPDC's Annual Report. A reflection of a year defined by purpose, progress, and an unwavering commitment to accountability.

Beyond the numbers and milestones, this report tells a story of collaboration, resilience, and the collective effort to strengthen transparency, improve public procurement, and empower citizens to demand better governance.

While we are proud of what has been accomplished, we remain conscious of the work that lies ahead. The challenges facing governance and development are significant, but so are the opportunities to drive lasting change.

In 2007, in Rivers State, 14-year-old Gospel Uabari Kinanee left home to play football with his friends. Along the way, he was picked up by police officers and disappeared from his family's life.

For 18 years, his family searched tirelessly across Rivers State, desperately seeking answers about their missing son and brother.

Their search yielded nothing. Years later, his older brother received a shocking phone call informing him that Gospel had been locked up in prison all along.

Now, Gospel is 32 years old. Eighteen years of his life have been taken from him. His childhood is gone, educational opportunities lost.

The prime years of his life were stolen by the reckless actions of incompetence.

The Administration of Criminal Justice Act was enacted to prevent injustices like this. Yet, despite the law, cases of unlawful detention and abuse of process continue to occur.
This must stop.

We call on the government and relevant authorities to ensure the strict enforcement of Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

No citizen should lose nearly two decades of their life because of institutional negligence.

Nigeria’s Rising Debt Burden: Politics or Development?
Nigeria is seeking a new $1.25bn World Bank loan aimed at supporting infrastructure, energy, agriculture, digital systems, and job creation. While the goals are development-focused, the timing is less than a year before the 2027 elections raising important questions about priorities and political incentives.

Nigeria’s public debt has surged from ₦12.6 trillion in 2015 to over ₦159 trillion in 2025. At the same time, debt servicing now consumes over 80–90% of government revenue, crowding out spending on education, health, and infrastructure.
With rising borrowing and limited evidence of strong development outcomes from past loans, concerns remain about whether new debt is driving real transformation or deepening a cycle of repayment pressure.
