@Madisonkanna Produce more value than you cost. This can mean: guiding your team, developing domain expertise, learning constantly, being likeable, being the “go-to” person for a variety of challenges. Doesn’t work if they cut the whole team though.
@RobotReorg@localised22@ProfNoahGian@Google@OpenAI And *surely* the gov will step in and save everyone, right? Like all those in poverty? All the homeless?
The system doesn’t GAF about humans unless they’re making money or spending money. AI will simply accelerate that trend
@RobotReorg@localised22@ProfNoahGian@Google@OpenAI Ah yes plummeting prices and everyone has a jolly good time. Just like we’re seeing the massive tech layoffs (which is how employment redundancies are handled). Next time it won’t be educated white-collar SF folks, but people who have $50 left over every month
@AdamRackis@samijaber_ It’s not as hard as you might think. Is any given product growing or not? Is it a core part of the roadmap or not? At one of my jobs, I bailed after it became apparent my project was dying. Layoffs and outsourcing occurred a few months later.
@ismetkahraman@davidfowl Corporations are “value creation” machines at scale. There is no value in nicely handling layoffs. Hence why it’s cold as ice.
@RobotReorg@localised22@ProfNoahGian@Google@OpenAI If you think a transition from “have a job and buy anything you want” to “have no income and trade stuff with your neighbors” wouldn’t accompany massive unrest and organized violence toward those with jobs/funds, that’s some real powerful optimism.
@diesalbla @stephondoestech The funny thing is that employees thought the gym memberships and free food were because the company “cared”. Exec leadership team must be laughing at the golf course about that one.
@diesalbla @stephondoestech I’m not justifying it, but simply stating that this is how MegaCorps operate. Always have, always will. “This business transaction is complete. Door card and email access revoked. Bye bye.”
@skidmarksplace@laurieontech To expand on this, Google employees aren’t going to be maintaining legacy WebForms and J2EE projects. There’s a lot of that still around.
@skidmarksplace@laurieontech It means you’ll be interviewing alongside Microsoft and Citrix employees for any decent roles. Mediocre (tech stack/culture/pay) jobs will also be available (for now). Good luck.
