I am pleased to announce that the Republic of Somaliland’s Embassy will be located in Jerusalem - the Embassy will be opened soon, while Israel will also establish its Embassy in Hargeisa, reflecting growing friendship, mutual respect, and strategic cooperation between our two peoples.
I was delighted to receive the first-ever Ambassador of Somaliland to Israel, Mohamed Hagi, who presented his diplomatic credentials this morning.
Ambassador Hagi was kind enough to praise our orchestra, who played the national anthem of Somaliland for the first time ever in Israel.
This important new partnership
between our nations will bring a shared future of cooperation in a range of fields to the benefit of both our peoples and the entire region.

BREAKING 🚨
Major diplomatic movement is taking shape following Israel’s recognition of the Republic of Somaliland.
Michael Lotem (@LotemMichael) is now being widely rumoured as Israel’s first ambassador to Somaliland.
Lotem is not an unknown figure. A veteran Israeli diplomat with over three decades of experience, he has served across Europe, Central Asia, and most recently East Africa. He was Israel’s ambassador to Kenya, with accreditation to multiple countries including Uganda, Tanzania, and Malawi, where he focused heavily on economic cooperation, technology partnerships, and regional diplomacy.
His career has been shaped by strengthening trade ties and advancing strategic partnerships something that aligns closely with Israel’s emerging approach to Somaliland as a geopolitical and economic partner in the Horn of Africa.
Currently serving as a mobile economic ambassador to Africa, Lotem’s potential appointment signals that Israel may prioritize investment, infrastructure, and economic diplomacy in Somaliland from the outset.
While no formal appointment has been confirmed, the reports point to a clear trajectory: the transition from recognition to structured diplomatic presence.
If realized, the appointment would mark a significant milestone the establishment of Israel’s first resident diplomatic representation in Somaliland, reinforcing its growing international engagement and strategic relevance in the Horn of Africa.
We welcome the appointment of Israel’s first ambassador to the Republic of Somaliland, with Michael Lotem taking on this historic role.
This represents a major step forward in strengthening ties between Israel and the Republic of Somaliland, based on shared values, cooperation, and mutual opportunity.
