Chair @RepGregoryMeeks: Beijing’s national security law is being used to ruthlessly attack Hong Kongers—last week by sentencing democracy activists, this week by arresting dozens of pro-democracy politicians for participating in last year’s LegCo primaries

Police arrested dozens of pro-democracy politicians early Wednesday in a series of dawn raids that swept up many of the opposition’s most prominent opposition figures https://t.co/yZtoHg9KY9
Over 50 pro-democracy freedom fighters were just arrested in Hong Kong under the so-called national security law for participating in the primary election last July. Carrie Lam’s Beijing-controlled government calls this “suspicion of subversion”. https://t.co/9MOnHABpM9
The world knows what is really happening in #HongKong as Beijing continues to crackdown against freedoms. Arresting opposition leaders won’t squash the desire for fundamental rights. I stand with the people of Hong Kong against CCP repression.

The Chinese Communist Party has escalated their repression in #HongKong by arresting dozens of the most prominent opposition leaders, including John Clancey, an American citizen. I strongly condemn these actions by the CCP. 1/2 https://t.co/VE7zpKkYYN
This happens just days after EU & China agreed on investment-deal CAI.
It shows 2 things: 1) Beijing is confident that EU (& GER gvt) separates business interests (CAI) and HK-issues, just like the chin. gvt wants it to, so nothing to fear for BJ no matter what it does in HK.
One by one, many Hong Kongers I have gotten accustomed to interviewing and speaking to about the city's politics and future have fled into exile or been arrested.
Hong Kong woke up this morning to ~50 arrests under the national security law, netting the city's most prominent pro-democracy activists, voices like Jeffrey Andrews who have long fought for ethnic minorities, and even a pollster:

I can’t believe that Jeffrey — someone who has done nothing but an incredible amount of good for Hong Kong, especially its ethnic minorities — has been arrested, with the possibility of life in jail, for coming dead last in an informal primary for an election that never happened.
So Hong Kong: HK friend apologizes for bothering me amid US election craziness to share news of mass arrests. No, really it’s ok, this is pretty important.
Sunny Cheung, a participant in the primaries, said the arrests show his decision to flee overseas after the national security law came into effect was right, though painful. “This is obviously a political purge to erase the whole pro-democracy camp” https://t.co/p5zVTvdmc1
China’s crackdown on democracy will not be ignored by the world. More than 50 prominent democratic advocates were arrested today in Hong Kong. This is unacceptable, HKers’ rights are human rights.
We strongly condemn the arrests of pro-democracy activists who stood in last year's democratic primaries. Beijing is once again undermining Hong Kong's democracy & breaching its obligations under the Sino-British Joint Declaration.
