✅ Labour members voted for a motion to bring in Proportional Representation.
✅ Most Labour-affiliated unions support PR.
It's great to see senior figures from across the party embrace electoral reform as well.
First Past the Post has had its day. It's time to move on.
Nadia is right. First Past the Post is not working, and it's only going to get worse.
🌹 This is an issue that unites the Labour movement. It's time the government took the lead.
✅ Proportional Representation is the right thing to do.

🗳️Could Burnham as PM bring electoral reform?
Labour MP @alexsobel, Lib Dem MP @OllyGloverLD, CEO of @MakeVotesMatter Emma Harrison, and Chief Executive of @electoralreform@darrenhughesnz, join
@Alain_Tolhurst to ask:
What could Burnham as PM mean for our democracy, given his strongly held and long-standing views about electoral reform?

Electoral reform is a key part in tackling disillusionment in the political system.
I spoke with @alexsobel, CEO of @MakeVotesMatter, and Chief Executive of @electoralreform on @politicshome about what Burnham as PM could mean for our voting system.

No social justice without democratic justice.
No economic justice without democratic justice.
No environmental justice without democratic justice.
And no democratic justice without Proportional Representation.
No government should be able to win a big majority on a minority of the vote. Our voting system is warping our politics beyond recognition.
I have joined 65 other MPs in signing an amendment pushing for a National Commission on Electoral Reform.
This is a necessary first step toward building a more representative system - one where power reflects the people, not the quirks of a failing model.
❓"When winning on votes fails to get you elected, is it still democracy?"
In several councils, the biggest party is not the one that got the most votes. That's how broken Britain's voting system is.
The New Statesman writes about our new report👇

Liberal Democrats will always fight for Proportional Representation, to make sure politics works for everyone.
We may have every councillor on some councils, but we don't have every vote. Everyone's voice deserves to be heard and represented.
A reminder:
In Birmingham, the Greens got the most votes but fewer seats than Reform.
In Milton Keynes, the Lib Dems came fourth in vote share but became the biggest party.
In Wandsworth, Labour won more votes than the Tories but fewer seats.
First Past the Post is broken.
We won every seat on Richmond upon Thames Council last week.
But that doesn’t mean we’ve changed our mind on electoral reform.
It’s time the Government stopped defending a broken system out of self-interest and backed proportional representation.
Any political project that intends to defeat Reform must have at its core:
1. Redistribution of the wealth in this country via a fairer tax system, inc wealth tax
2. Redistribution of power via a fairer electoral system at the very least.
Is this on offer in Labour contest?
Despite it being obvious that the time of two-party politics is over, the govt laid out no plans to introduce a fairer voting system in the King's Speech.
That's why Green MPs tabled an amendment on the need to bring in proportional representation and make every voice heard.
Our current first-past-the-post voting system is hugely undemocratic, allowing a political party to secure a massive majority of seats on a minority vote.
We need to introduce proportional representation now to ensure every voice is heard and every vote counts.
"Nothing will change for the vast majority in our country until we change our democratic system so that we can change our economic system; until we own and control the basics in our lives such as water, energy, housing and transport"

Do the local election results show that it's time for proportional representation?
@MakeVotesMatter CEO Emma Harrison makes the case in a column for Left Foot Forward. 👇
