@MTA It’s unconscionable that a public agency would be so cavalier (and fraudulent?) when they have fundamental #safety obligations to the riders and workers in this #transit system.
We all deserve better.
A scandalous revelation that calls into question the basic safety of riding (& operating) a @NYCTBus.
Vehicle mtce. is not something to mess with. Imagine bringing your car in for a brake job & the mechanic says he did your rotors & pads meanwhile they’re metal on metal? 😳
🚨Last night, ABC7’s N.J. Burkett reported a blockbuster story exposing the MTA’s falsifying of bus maintenance records, jeopardizing Bus Operators, the riding public and anyone else on the road.
Armed with the records proving widespread fraud, TWU Local 100 has blown the lid off of senior MTA management’s concealing of serious bus maintenance failures through their systematic clearing of repair orders that were never completed.
Following surprise 19A inspections at bus depots across the city, the union has uncovered buses with serious safety defects—including cracked windshields, inoperative lights, brake issues and other unresolved mechanical problems—that should never have been returned to service.
Local 100 President John V. Chiarello said the records paint a troubling picture of an agency more focused on making maintenance problems disappear on paper than actually fixing them in the garages.
The union’s investigation revealed evidence of work orders that show Bus Maintainers being credited with repairs while they were off duty, on personal leave—not even at the depot.
Maintenance Directors Tommy Lenane and Mike Rehn said the records reveal a pattern in which critical “redline hold” defects including brakes, steering and tires were marked as repaired despite no work having been performed.
The MTA’s response is to deny that this is happening, yet they admit at least one MTA Supervisor has been suspended since ABC7 began asking questions.

In this case, Transit mgmt. is closing out work orders on mechanics before the work is ever done. So that they can show they’re doing “more with less” (i.e. juicing productivity numbers despite a shortage of Chassis Maintainers) & look good to guys like @MTA’s Janno Lieber.
@dmtrubman@TwuSamuelsen A white gentrifier in “Harlem, NYC” lecturing twitter about the working class while taking cheap shots at organized labor. Definitely on-brand.
@njburkett7@TWULocal100@MTA@ABC7NY This is what transit workers & riders are up against w/ this agency. Intransigent, arrogant, dismissive, all to hide their mismanagement & dishonesty from the public they are bound to serve. There’s a reason public opinion of MTA “corporate” is so poor & the view is well deserved
Astounding that the @MTA— the nation’s largest transit agency— would casually deny proven & extremely serious safety hazards as “bogus” & provide no factual retort.
MTA flack @timmintonNY just waves his hand. “Nothing to see here, folks” 🙄
The public should be outraged.
The proof is in the paperwork.
The @MTA is endangering our members, the ridership and everyone else on the road with their habit of cutting corners to save on hiring maintainers and putting unsafe buses out for service while claiming the necessary repair work was performed.
Not once. Not twice. We uncovered a pattern, one we’ve brought to the agency’s attention in the past. Nothing changed.
Hopefully this is loud enough so that they get the message.

@SenFettermanPA Because we’re not all corrupt braindead assholes like you.
You’re the biggest embarrassment in the United States Senate, which is really saying something.
@SenFettermanPA one would think your recent major struggles would give you a certain humility, or even a little shred of decency. Instead you’re an even more obnoxious sellout prick than ever. Fuck you John Fetterman.
