The IRS hasn't updated many deductions in years. Adjusted for inflation, here’s what it should be:

- Lost money? $3k capital loss limit (1978) → should be $15k now

- Student loans? $2.5k student loan interest deduction (1997) → should be $4.8k now

- Childcare? $3k dependent care credit (1976) → should be $17k now

- Retired? $25k/$32k social security income tax brackets (1983) → should be $78k/$100k now

- Selling a home? $250k/$500k home sale exclusion (1997) → should be $485k/$970k now

- Helping family? $10k gift exclusion (1982) → should be $35k now

These should be updated yearly. Another example of Congress and the IRS not doing its job.
