Great piece, great reminder of the joy inherent in our work. Earlier today a patient commented that care like this is more special than ever…because it’s become the exception to a rushed, commodified reality of practice.
Happy holidays! Wishing you a winter recharge—log off, slow down, & rest.
We’ll be offline until Jan 2—see you in the New Year!

@TheSurajKannan As you know, I am a firm believer that this starts in primary care, long long before a crisis where we can get used to the idea that sometimes we have the opportunity to control a bit of what our end of life looks like and plan to try to make it so
“Something as simple as wearing a unique article of clothing, like colorful socks, can help build connections with patients.”-@RichardSchaeferMD @millstej@EricLast3#MedTwitter https://t.co/mtkY3YBFJr
@CLOSLER@millstej Building connections, building relationships, build the foundations of our work. Mentioning that patient’s recent birthday, the birth of their grandchild, or how their fave sports team is doing…all make connections. And those connections help us help them…and recharge us.
Wonderful reminder of the impact that our words, and how they’re delivered and received, has on our patients. All the more important at a time when patients may get bad news via an electronic portal, alone with their thoughts and feelings.
"New medical information can be hard for pts to process, esp. if it's bad news. Taking time to assess the impact of newly delivered information is an important step in clinical conversations."- @millstej@marklewismd@EricLast3@CoryRohlfsen#MedTwitter https://t.co/5ISAujUxkU
A wonderful piece with many lessons.
May I add the wish that systems grant us the time that both we and our patients crave and deserve…and also that we be judged not by the productivity we generate, but by the humanity and heart we bring to our work.
In the course of pt care, clinicians are often witness to powerful, emotion-filled stories. To continue to do this work, we must find ways to replenish ourselves & reach out for support when needed. @DrHowardLiu@netflix @ThePICULife #MedTwitter

A genuine "thank you" to a pt or coworker can be powerful. It acknowledges the profound gifts of trust, collaboration, & shared humanity that underpin all healing and connection. @EndoHopkins@HopkinsMedicine#MedTwitter@Hallmark https://t.co/mVA5yIUPMK

@CLOSLER@UHC@AnthemBCBS@aboutKP Great piece…a reminder to understand some of our patients’ major stressors. But also….there needs to be an organized effort to fight back against the onslaught of PA’s. & health care systems must build in support for clinicians, especially in primary care, already overburdened.
@CLOSLER @davidkopaczmd @rabihmgeha@AnnieDuke Wonderful piece @davidkopaczmd! Opening our minds and flushing the hubris and listening - really listening - to our patients. Sometimes we all need to be reminded how important that is.
@CLOSLER@doclauravater@navarrotradmed @JohnLauner @ManuelPera11 So true, and all year long, too! Things can get lost in the “big picture.” But one on one, a little kindness, understanding and empathy go a long way.
@CLOSLER@millstej @davidkopaczmd @cjstreed@CoryRohlfsen@AbrahamNussbaum @meggerber @doclauravater Touché, @millstej ! Our (non) system fosters confusion & frustration in our patients…often when they’re most vulnerable. Golden rule of healthcare…imagine you’re in their shoes, the one who needs help. How can we make their journey easier? And how can systems help too?
