@Jaklgreen@credealjunkie Kid reads a new text. You don't know what the text says. Kid throws the phone down and storms out of the room crying. As a parent, you have information you wouldn't have had if the kid had read the text privately. So there is value in observing the kid even w/o reading texts.
@BretWeinstein Quite the conundrum. In order to have religious freedom and a secular society ("the West"), it is essential we don't have religious freedom.
This is my way of paraphrasing with the intent to elucidate what I perceive to be the main flaw of your post.
@BretWeinstein Won't meaningfully alter max human lifespan? Ever? Is this a tautology, in the end? In particular, if we do eventually come up with a life extension, will you then simply claim the resulting beings are not human? Or are you just thinking of the next few decades of research?
@fatnutritionist Do you think you are okay with living in the city because you live in the city or do you live in the city because you are okay with living in the city?
To me, the confusing thing is how many people (seemingly) cannot imagine having a different set of preferences.
@aknox92@kendrictonn As a frequent pedestrian myself, this has always been annoying. But nowadays it's worse, with drivers on cell phones and windows tinted so dark you can't see them. Are they waiting or just completely oblivious?
@fawfulfan Simple modeling exercise: Group A has declining birth rates but most of the current population. Group B has high and steady birth rate but small percentage of current population. Eventually, Group B's population dominates. E.g., the Amish.
@Molson_Hart Counterargument: The fact that your homeowners insurer has standards for which claims it pays, and doesn't just pay off any old crazy claim submitted, is a good thing. You don't want your insurer paying stupid claims not covered by the policy. Because policyholders pay for them.
@kofinas I'd rather go bare on pretty much any other type of insurance before skipping homeowners insurance... car, health, dental, vision, life, cell phone, travel, title.
@PerkulesB@amredman@kofinas It's a bad gamble in a straight EV sense, but the question is about risk taking. Transferring the risk from a slight chance of a ruinous event to an insurer for a small premium (pun intended) is often worth it.
@Fimiye Generally there's a crowd around the baggage carousel, any one of whom could be the rightful owner of the bag you're stealing. Counterpoint, though, is you could just say "oh, sorry, mine looks like this too." Hmm.
@FrankBr05713205 I've often encountered menus that list prices for food but not for drinks. So... as much as I love soda, I'm not buying one without knowing how much it costs. "Just water for me, thanks."
