Over the last few weeks, the situation for Ukraine on the frontline has rapidly deteriorated in an unprecedented manner not seen since early 2025.
In the northeastern corner Kharkiv Oblast, Russia has achieved two localised breakthroughs, threatening to encircle more than 360 km² of Ukrainian-controlled territory.
In the Dobropillya direction, one of the most formidable Ukrainian strongholds which has stood for over a year has been breached, with Russian forces now flooding Ukrainian positions in the urban agglomeration between Pokrovsk and Dobropillya.
In the Kramatorsk/Slovyansk direction, Ukraine has been unable to slow down Russian advances, with Russia now coming within 4.7 km of both Slovyansk and Kramatorsk, and coming close to fully capturing the crucial tactical ridgeline east of these two final Donbas cities.
In the Kostyantynivka direction, Russia has captured Chasiv Yar after 840 days of battles, and has almost completed the capture of Kostyantynivka. The salient west of Chasiv Yar is falling apart day by day as Ukraine withdraws.
In the Druzhkivka direction, Russia achieved a localised breakthrough of up to 6 km, capturing 3 villages and entering 3 others, coming within 5.1 km of Druzhkivka, and threatening the Ukrainian salient west of Kostyantynivka with encirclement.
In the Omelnyk direction, Russia has finally captured the Ukrainian stronghold town of Zaliznychne after over 7 months of battles, and are making new advances west of the Haichur River towards Vozdyvzhivka.
In the Stepnohirsk direction, Russia has halted the Ukrainian counterattacks and have begun retaking previously lost ground, advancing northeast of Kamyanske and north from Mali Shcherbaky.
In the Kupyansk direction, the crucial Ukrainian bridgehead east of the Oskil River continues to shrink day by day, with Russian forces expanding their zone of control in the area of Novosynove, Kivsharivka, Pishchane, Petropavlivka, and Kupyansk itself.
Ukraine is losing incredibly important defensive positions necessary for holding the frontline in the future, especially the areas south of Dobropillya which should not be falling this quickly. However, they are seemingly intent on concentrating their assault forces in counterattacks north of Lyman, west of Komar, and south of Novopavlivka, which have questionable (at best) strategic reasoning for the heavy cost being endured.
The new Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi has inherited a situation that is getting worse by the day, and will have to make some serious and difficult decisions in order to try stabilise it towards the end of Summer.
Tedros
The Russians are finally deploying the Lys-2 interceptor drone, which has an automatic targeting system and is designed to shoot down Ukrainian OWA UAVs, preserving more valuable systems.
It remains to be seen how long it takes to scale such systems but it’s expected to increase efficiency against growing Ukrainian drone raids.
I genuinely love it when people say this and I hope it remains like this forever.
American political issues are whether their government of elites should be able to get away with r*ping kids.
Our political issues are why we didn't get our new ferries the government promised.
They continue to burn money in a lost war in Ukraine, for which we citizens will have to pay the debt during the rest of the century. They approve an unfair economic agreement that will make us poorer. They tell us to prepare for a future war with Russia while shaking hands with the Islamist terrorists responsible for major attacks on European soil.
Stick your blue ugly flag, freedom, and democracy where they fit.
Russian forces have launched a new incursion across the international border into Sumy Oblast, quickly capturing the villages of Hrabovske and Vysoke. Attacks are now underway, with the Russians attempting to penetrate deeper into the region.
As usual with these sorts of incursions, the goal is not to take large swaths of territory. The goal is to stretch Ukrainian forces even thinner, worsening the issues coming from their manpower shortages.
If Ukraine decides to redeploy units away from one direction to this new area in order to reinforce the lines, halt, and possibly even push back Russian forces, the area which they are redeployed from will be significantly weakened, making it easier for the Russians to make progress in.
This is all part of what I like to call Russia's "Whack-a-mole" tactic, which softens up the lines, and exploits the successful attrition being dealt to Ukraine right now. It puts Ukraine in a difficult spot, as if they choose not to redeploy here, the incursion zone could continue to expand and become even more difficult and costly to deal with later on.
Essentially, they are trying to put out more fires than they can possibly deal with - and Russia keeps setting new ones. The main reason why they can't deal with all of the fires at once is because of manpower shortages, which are only continuing to get worse.
Expect more maneuvers like this in different places from Russian forces in the future.

The latest UN conference has once again demonstrated that Spain is governed by wretched individuals. As a Spaniard, I am ashamed of these scoundrels and the institutions that claim to represent the Spanish people. This is an insult to a country and a society that has been fighting terrorism for sixty years and suffered one of the worst terrorist attacks on European soil.

GPT-5 just casually did new mathematics.
Sebastien Bubeck gave it an open problem from convex optimization, something humans had only partially solved. GPT-5-Pro sat down, reasoned for 17 minutes, and produced a correct proof improving the known bound from 1/L all the way to 1.5/L.
This wasn’t in the paper. It wasn’t online. It wasn’t memorized. It was new math. Verified by Bubeck himself.
Humans later closed the gap at 1.75/L, but GPT-5 independently advanced the frontier.
A machine just contributed original research-level mathematics.
If you’re not completely stunned by this, you’re not paying attention.
We’ve officially entered the era where AI isn’t just learning math, it’s creating it. @sama@OpenAI@kevinweil@gdb@markchen90
On August 15, 1261 Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos entered Constantinople in a triumph through the Golden Gate!
The city had been liberated by the Romans from the Crusaders - but what kind of city did he walk into?
In a sense it was almost apocalyptic!
The Queen of Cities was an enormous but desolate and empty city. The population had gone from hundreds of thousands to 30,000. It was full of ruins and stones, of houses burned to the ground or abandoned, and of the few remains of the great fires set by the crusaders…what Michael saw must have been shocking, in a sense, after the high of conquering the city.
The Latin Quarters of the city were freshly burned, this time by the Romans. When the soldiers under Alexios Strategopoulos had entered Constantinople, the main Latin army and Venetian fleet were not in the city. According to George Acropolites Crusaders tried to return “but the Roman army, aware of this, set fire to the houses of the Latins which were by the shore and burned them, first the houses of the Venetians, then those of the other races…By the providence of God the city of Constantine again became subject to the emperor of the Romans, in a just and fitting way, on the 25th of July in 1261, after being held by the enemy for 58 years.”
The Emperor’s dream had come true, Akropolites records that “his every effort and whole aim was to rescue it from the Latins.” After it had been finally been achieved “it occurred to him to make the entrance into the city of Constantine in a manner more reverential to God than imperial.” He waited a day, until August 15 on the day of the Formation of the Virgin Mary. Michael humbly walked behind an icon carried in front of him, instead of riding on horseback, as he entered through the ancient Golden Gate into a city he had never seen but had always dreamed of. It was more like a religious procession into the city than a pure triumph.
Michael proceeded first from the Golden Gate to the Stoudios monastery, depositing the icon of the Theotokos there. He then went to the Hagia Sophia, and thanked God for his victory there. After his prayers, Michael proceeded to the Great Palace. The small remaining Roman population “was of good cheer and felt great gladness of heart and immense joy…almost doubting the deed because of the unexpectedness of the event.” A few days later, the Patriarch arrived in Constantinople. In the Patriarchal palace of the Hagia Sophia the Emperor restored him to his throne. and Michael took his hand and said “You have your throne, master. Enjoy now the see of which you have long been deprived.”
All of that was great, but amidst it all there was a more sobering reality.
I can’t help but imagine that the excitement he felt when he heard his general Alexios Strategopoulos had captured the city was replaced by shock, seeing a city he imagined as great mostly in ruins. He was born in Anatolia in 1224, long after the tragedy of the Fourth Crusade. But certainly he would have heard of Constantinople, it was the dream of the Romans in the Empire of Nicaea to liberate their lost capital. There were great aspects, it was like the skeleton of a giant beast. The bones were impressive - it had the Hagia Sophia, the aqueduct, the mighty Theodosian walls, many other churches. But the flesh of the city, its population once in the hundreds of thousands, its ancient artworks, its vibrant wealth and culture, were mostly gone.
Elenoa Boeck, in her book The Bronze Horseman of Justinian of Constantinople wrote: “Encountering the physical city must have been a startling experience. Much of the ceremonial, historical center and the imperial fora had been ruined by Latin fires at the time of Crusader conquest, and many of its ancient statues had also perished. During the decades of Latin occupation, churches were pillaged for metal and stone, and most of Constantinople’s precious relics, including the Crown of Thorns, had been sold abroad.” (**The story is continued below**)
I have to not stay silent on this.
Diana literally won the the Journalist of the Year in Ukraine in 2020.
If someone so prominent, reporting on HER OWN COUNTRY and yet getting shut out, just because it doesnt fit their government's agenda - and that a BIG TECH from another country intervene to silence her her to aid the censorship for the Ukraine government...
...then what is there to talk about freedom of speech and freedom of expression???
What democracy/freedom are we, as the collective west (yes, Singapore is part of the collective west as well, along with Japan and South Korea) - are we claiming to be fighting for in Ukraine???
Arent that just make the collective west no difference with Russia???
I am neutral to this war; but just by reporting the neutral perspective already had me tip-toeing around Youtube's guidelines - and wary of Youtube labelling me as pro-Russia (because I'm not. I'm actually more pro-USA than anything.)
I'm used to getting censored by Big Tech simply for doing basic journalism and reporting - not to mention DPA was literally suppressed 3 months into the war in 2022 by Youtube for a good half a year; and still struggling to recover from it (which DPA was the first of its kind of reporting and was the biggest channel reporting on the war via "mapping-reporting... lost that position after getting suppressed)
We have to stop the censorship of press.
The truth, as difficult as it may be, reduces human sufferings all around the world.
#returnPanchenko
We might be witnessing the beginning of the total collapse of the Ukrainian defense.
In fact, RIGHT ON TIME, based on DPA's late February analysis (some call it "prediction") - where the collapse should happen latest this month or end of this month.
Entire line broke north of Myrnohrad, as Russia push into unfortified grounds, stretching the frontline even way longer, something the Ukrainian military, whom is already struggling with manpower, wont be able to plug.
