BORROW 5M, PAY BACK18M: THE LOAN TRAP IN KAMPALA

A colleague came to my office last week. She needed help reading her loan papers.

A money lender offered her "a quick loan of 6 Million shillings at 28%".
She assumed 28% total for 24 months. Simple. Fair.

She was wrong.

Here is what the contract actually said:

What she signed for: 6,000,000/=
What she received: 5,000,000/=
They deducted 1,000,000/= upfront and called it "fees".

Monthly repayment: 599,350/=
599,350 x 24 months = 14,384,400/=

Tracking and admin fee: 150,000/= per month
150,000 x 24 months = 3,600,000/=

TOTAL SHE WILL PAY IN 24 MONTHS: 17,984,400/=
For money she actually used: 5,000,000/=

That is not 28%.
That is 28% per month, charged every month for 2 years.
In other words, she will pay back almost 4 times what she took home.

Most people don’t fail because they are careless. They fail because the terms are designed so you won’t do the math. No one reads the fine print when rent is due tomorrow.

Please. Before you sign:
1. Ask "Is this 28% per year or per month?"
2. Ask "What will I receive in hand vs what am I signing for?"
3. Add up all fees + installments x months. That is your real cost.
4. Walk away if they rush you or say "don’t worry, just sign".

Debt should help you, not own you.

For context: how cheap is "cheap money" in the Western world?

To show how different it can be:

United States and Europe: A personal bank loan or credit union loan for someone with decent credit is usually 6% to 12% APR per year. A mortgage is often 5% to 7% per year.

Example: Borrow $10,000 at 8% APR for 2 years.
You pay back about $11,060 total. That is $1,060 in interest.

In my colleague’s case, borrowing the equivalent of about $1,350 and paying back about $4,850 in 2 years.

The difference is regulation, competition, and credit reporting. Banks there lend at annual rates, not monthly flat rates, and they are required by law to disclose the true APR so you can compare.

We don’t have that same protection here, so we have to protect each other.

This is theft. How can 6M at 2.8% interest generate monthly instalment of 599,350= monthly? This is 14,384,400ugx in 24 months. Again, tracking fees of 150,000ugx per month for 24 months is 3.6m on a loan of 6M. Total to pay 17,984,400/=. This is money laundering!

H. E. Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Mr. Lino Anguzu as Director of Public Prosecutions.

This comes after the President appointed Hon. Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo as Principal Judge.

Mr. Lino Anguzu has been an Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions and Head of the International Crimes Department in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

The President has forwarded Mr. Lino Anguzu’s name to Parliament for vetting.

Congratulations to Mr. Lino Anguzu for the appointment.
