There's been lots of discussion on generative linguistics and generative AI. @EvaPortelance and I chime in here, suggesting that Neural Language Models (NLMs) reinforce key tenets of Chomsky’s approach in at least 3 fundamental ways, and that in turn, generative linguistics can
Advancing understanding of human and artificial reasoning.

@peter_richtarik Journals in my field are making double blind reviewing optional. I personally sign my reviews because I stand by what I say and care. Taking the anonymity away even optionally could help; at least you know that if they chose to put their name to it they stand by what it said.

Studying the dynamics of joint inference over many input sources is an important new direction for language modeling and learning research in both CogSci and AI; It may help explain language acquisition in constrained learning settings.5/5
Joint learning makes language acquisition easier for learners by mutually constraining the hypotheses spaces for both syntax and semantics. Simultaneous access to linguistic and visual-grounding input allows models to exploit the synergistic information between them.4/5
Congrats to OAI on producing a reasoning model! Their opaque tweets demonstrate that they’ve (independently) found some of the core ideas that we did on our way to STaR.

Tons of fun, 3h of non-stop chatting and exchange of ideas, now pretty exhausted 😅
In the past two years I have been slowly removing deadlines in my undergrad teaching and allowing students to have multiple attempts for an assignment. The results have been positive so far so I'm sharing the idea here. Two things have been bothering me in teaching: 1. we know
Chomskyan principles still offer a relevant framework to think about how AI models have the potential to impact how theoretical linguistics is studied in the future, in particular models that learn structured representations like neural grammar induction models.
